William Paul Bray...is an alum of the College of William & Mary...majored in business...the Tribe's all-time saves leader went 11-10 with 11 saves and a 3.28 ERA (54 ER/148.0 IP) in 3 collegiate seasons...was the first student-athlete from William & Mary to be selected in the first-round of the First-Year Player Draft...as a junior, went 4-4 with 8 saves and a 2.44 ERA as the Tribe set a school record for wins (37) in a single season...struck out 81 and walked just 15 in 29 games out of the bullpen, posting a 5.4/1 strikeout-to-walk ratio...fanned 12.8 batters per 9.0 innings pitched and limited opposing hitters to a .211 batting average against and was named 2nd-team All-Colonial Athletic Association for a 2nd consecutive season...following the Summer of '04, was rated by Baseball America as one of the Top 30 prospects in the exclusive Cape Cod League...graduated from Ocean (VA) Lakes High.
2012
Was limited to one hold (July 23 at HOU) in just 14 appearances in final season with the Reds due to a trio of DL stints (left groin strain-twice, lumbar muscle strain)...struggled with command (14 walks in 8.2 innings)...did not allow a run in final 6 appearances or 4.2 innings with CIN from July 14-30...missed the season's final 2 months and the postseason with the lumbar strain...pitched in 16 contests during a pair of rehab stints.
2011
Led the Reds' pitching staff and ranked T2nd in the National League with a career-high 79 apps...also established career highs in wins (5) and innings pitched (48.1)...pitched in 47 victories, second on the staff to Francisco Cordero (54 wins)...retired the first batter 62-79 times (79%), second-best on the team behind Sam LeCure (32-39, 82%)...began the year with a season-best 10 consecutive scoreless apps (8.1ip)...suffered 2 of his 3 blown saves in a 3-appearance span from 7/25-7/29...in November participated in Major League Baseball's All-Star tour of Taiwan...in that 5-game exhibition series sweep earned saves in Game 2 (5-3 win) and Game 4 (3-2 win).
2010
Began the season on the minor league disabled list while recovering from 5/19/09 "Tommy John" surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow...came off the DL on 6/4 and made 4 scoreless apps for Lynchburg (4.2ip), then on 6/13 was promoted to Louisville and made 6 more scoreless apps (5.2ip) before he joined the Reds on 6/27...the next night vs Phi made his first Major League appearance since the final game of the 2008 season...twice allowed 3 earned runs in an appearance (0.1ip on 8/19 at Ari, 1.2ip on 9/6 at Col)...his ERA in his other 33 apps was 2.39...stranded 17-24 inherited baserunners...didn't allow a run in any of his last 7 apps of the season (5ip, 2h)...in his last 14 apps posted a 2.31era (11.2ip, 3er)...LH batters went 5-for-47 (.106, 3hr)...overall, minor league batters went 3-for-35 (10g, 10.1ip, 3h, 0r, 3bb, 16k)... pitched in Games 1 and 3 of the National League Division Series vs Phi and retired all 5 batters faced (2k).
2009
Made just 3 apps for Class AAA Louisville before an elbow injury ended his season...on 4/16 went on the Bats' disabled list with a strained left elbow...on 5/19 had Tommy John surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in that elbow (Dr. Timothy Kremchek)...was expected to miss 10-12 months from the date of surgery.
2008
For the Reds made a career-high 63 apps...in his last 19 apps of the season posted a 2.45era...began the season at Class AAA Louisville and was recalled on 4/28, when Todd Coffey was optioned to Louisville...from 4/29-5/4 didn't allow a run in 4 apps (4ip) for the Reds before he returned to Louisville on 5/5, when David Weathers came off the disabled list...was recalled again on 5/9, when Kent Mercker went to the DL, and spent the rest of the season with Cin...from 5/24-6/8 didn't allow a run in 8.2 innings, the longest scoreless streak of his career.
2007
Made 19 apps for the Reds and 20 apps in the minor leagues...was the only Reds pitcher other than David Weathers to record a save...began the season on the disabled list with a non-displaced hairline fracture at the tip of his left index finger, then was bothered by tendinitis in his left shoulder...didn't pitch in a game until 5/20, when he made a rehab appearance for FSL Sarasota...because of the shoulder injury didn't pitch again until 6/5 and then didn't make another appearance in a game until 6/27, when he was sent to Louisville on rehab...on 7/20, after 9 rehab apps, was reinstated from the 15-day DL and procedurally was optioned to Louisville...for the Bats overall made 18 apps before he was promoted to Cin on 8/11...made his season debut that afternoon vs SD...for the Reds posted a 1.93era in his first 11 apps and a 14.40era in his last 8 apps...converted his only save opportunity in a 6-5 win on 9/14 at Mil...stranded 9-11 inherited baserunners...on 1/18/08 had an appendectomy in Grapevine, Texas (Dr. Larry Elliott)...was expected to begin working out in 7-10 days from the date of surgery and throwing in about 2 weeks from that date.
2006
Combined to finish 3-2, 4.09 with 2 saves in 48 relief apps for the Nationals and Reds...overall threw 82.1 innings, a professional career high...began the season with the Nationals' Class AAA affiliate in New Orleans...appeared in 21g there before he was promoted to Wsh on 6/1...made 19 apps for the Nationals before he was traded to the Reds on 7/13 as part of an 8-player deal...for Wsh on 6/3 at Mil earned the 4-3 victory in his Major League debut...at 22 years, 11 months and 29 days old became the franchise's youngest lefthander to make his debut since Gabe White pitched for the Expos in 1994 at 22 years, 6 months, 7 days... on 6/4 at Mil recorded his first career strikeout (Corey Koskie)...earned his first 2 career saves while pitching for the Reds, on 7/25 at Hou (2-0 win) and 8/5 vs Atl (8-6 win)...on 7/15 vs Col, in his Reds debut pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the 3-2 victory... Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for 5/1-5/7.
2005
In his first full season as a professional pitched at all 3 levels...combined to make 34 apps at Class A Potomac, Class AA Harrisburg and Class AAA New Orleans...missed spring training and most of the season's first 2 months with tightness in his back...began the season on Potomac's disabled list with the back injury... was reinstated on 5/31 and made his season debut that night at Lynchburg and earned a save by throwing 2.0 perfect innings...at New Orleans averaged 10.5 strikeouts per 9 innings (21.1ip, 25k)...on 7/7 vs Nashville struck out all 3 batters faced.
2004
Signed his first professional contract on 7/24...made 6 apps at Class A Brevard County...on 8/20 at Vero Beach recorded his first professional save...following the season pitched for Peoria in the prestigious Arizona Fall League (9g, 16ip, 16k).
