Graduated from Nordhoff (Ojai, CA) High School in 1998...established singleseason school record with 1.37 ERA as junior in 1997...attended Ventura (CA) Junior College and Pepperdine (CA) University...earned All-America honors in 2001, while being named West Coast Conference Pitcher of Year...went 14-2 with 1.71 ERA (23er, 121.1ip) and 142 strikeouts in 18 games (17 starts) during his junior campaign...tied for 4th in country in wins and was 5th in ERA... was named to WCC/Rawlings 40th Anniversary Team in 2007...single.
2008
Missed season after undergoing surgery on his left forearm March 7 due to exertional compartment syndrome...surgery was performed by Giants hand specialist Dr. Gordon Brody in Redwood City, CA...had been rehabbing throughout season and was close to pitching in Arizona instructional league, but had setback and had to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow Sept. 30...Dr. Lewis Yocum performed procedure in Los Angeles, CA.
2007
Led Giants pitchers in wins (career-high 14) for 2nd time in 3 seasons (also 2005), despite missing final month of season due to left forearm tightness...led club in winning pct. (.636), while ranking 2nd in ERA (3.92), 3rd in innings (156.0), 3rd in quality starts (13) and 3rd for opp. avg. (.265)...however, struggled with command, tying for 3rd in NL with 87 walks...Giants were club-best 16-10 (.615) in his 26 opening assignments...despite missing final month, tied for 5th among NL left-handers for victories...became 11th SF left-hander to record at least 9 wins prior to All-Star Break, and 1st since Kirk Rueter won 10 in 1998...went 8-2 with 4.16 ERA (31er, 67.0ip) over his final 12 starts...however surrendered 13 runs over 8.0 frames in his last 2 starts before being shut down for season...limited lefties to .216 avg. Battled through season of injury and ailments to finish 4th on club with 27 starts...suffered 1st losing campaign, logging 7-10 mark with career-high 4.74 ERA...Giants were 11-16 in his 27 starts, dropping 8 of his last 12 assignments...was forced to exit 2006 debut in 2nd inning of home opener April 6 vs. Atlanta with right oblique strain...had retired 5 of his 1st 6 batters before having to leave with 2-2 count on Brian Jordan in 2nd...was on Disabled List April 7-May 7...made 25 starts following activation from DL May 8, going 7-10 with 4.80 ERA (84er, 157.2ip)...worked at least 6.0 innings in 17 of 26 starts following return...had superb August, going 2-0 with 1.86 mark (8er, 38.2ip) and limiting opponents to .173 avg. (23-for-133)....led NL in avg. against during month, while ranking 4th in ERA...posted career-best 2-hitter Aug. 21, when he blanked Arizona 5-0 for his 2nd career shutout...Orlando Hudson collected both hits, while he faced only 3 over minimum...was forced to miss Sept. 6 start in Cincinnati with left elbow irritation, which first affected him in Sept. 1 start at Chicago...struggled down stretch, going 0-3 with 10.72 ERA (27er, 22.2ip) over his final 5 starts...hit 1st career homer July 8 in LA, solo clout off Derek Lowe.

Staff stalwart was only member of original starting rotation to not miss start all season, logging 33 opening assignments...endured early-season growing pains, but rebounded to lead Giants starters with 13 wins, 204.2 innings, 3.78 ERA and 172 strikeouts...Giants were 18-15 (.545) when he took hill...put together tremendous 2nd half, as his 8 wins tied for 3rd most ever by SF lefty after All-Star Break...only Ron Bryant (10 victories in 1973) and Trevor Wilson (9 in 1991) logged more wins...went 8-4 with 2.43 ERA (27er, 100.0ip) and .217 avg. against (78-for-360) in 15 starts following Mid-Summer Classic, ranking among top NL starters in wins (T5th), ERA (5th), opponents avg. (7th) and strikeouts (T11th - 85)...foundation for 2nd half surge was laid in June, as beginning with June 15 victory at Minnesota, went 11-7 with 2.90 ERA (44er, 136.1ip) over his last 21 starts...yielded just .230 avg. against (115-for-500), with 118 strikeouts against 48 walks...over 1st 12 starts, was 2-6 with 5.53 ERA (42er, 68.1ip) and .283 avg. against (78-for-276)...was named NL Pitcher of Month for August, pacing circuit in ERA with 0.69 mark (3er, 39.1ip), while tying for lead with 5 wins...was 5-0 in 5 starts, while limiting opponents to .167 avg. (22-for-132)...struck out 33 and walked 9...worked at least 7.0 innings in all 5 efforts...also was victorious in 1st Sept. start, as he fashioned 1.19 ERA (6er, 45.1ip) while winning season-high 6 consecutive starts Aug. 6-Sept. 3...won at Colorado April 14 to remain unbeaten in majors, then suffered 1st big league loss April 20 to Arizona...setback to Diamondbacks started career-long 5-game losing skid through May 17, 6-start stretch during which he surrendered 6.55 ERA (24er, 33.0ip)...enjoyed tremendous season with bat, ranking 3rd among NL hurlers with .276 avg. (16-for-58) and 3rd with .379 slugging pct....tied for 2nd in league with 6 2Bs, tied for 4th with 7 RBI (most by SF pitcher since Russ Ortiz had 9 in 2002), and tied for 4th with 12 sacrifice bunts...hit safely in 14 of his 32 starts in NL parks, including pair of multi-hit contests.
2004
Rookie went 6-0, with all of his victories coming after Aug. 3 recall to finish 3rd among SF hurlers for wins in 2nd Half...only Brett Tomko (7-2) and Jason Schmidt (7-5) had as many wins for Giants following All-Star Break...had 4 stints with Giants (April 21-22, June 11-19, June 21-July 3 and Aug. 3-end of season)...made 16 Major League appearances (14 starts), while also logging 17 outings at triple-A Fresno...despite appearing in only 16 games, ranked among NL rookies in wins (T4th - 6), ERA (2nd - 3.82), starts (2nd - 14), innings (1st - 92.0), strikeouts (4th - 72), winning streak (1st - 6), complete games (1st - 2) and avg. against (2nd - .259)...moved into rotation full time Aug. 3, taking slot of eventual closer Dustin Hermanson...Giants won 9 of his 11 starts following Aug. 3 recall, while posting personal 6-0 mark with 3.91 ERA (31er, 71.1ip)...posted 3.48 ERA (34er, 88.0ip) in 14 ML starts, going 6-0...SF was 10-4 in his 14 starts, winning 10 of his last 13...in 2 relief appearances for Giants, had 11.25 ERA (5er, 4.0ip)...limited opponents to 3-or-less earned runs in 10 of his 14 efforts (71.4%), while working at least 6.0 frames in 8 starts (57.1%)...SF went 6-2 in games he worked at least 6.0 frames...had good success at SBC Park, going 5-0 with 3.10 ERA (18er, 52.1ip) in 8 outings (7 starts)...collected 1st big league victory Aug. 3, with 11-0 shutout of Cincinnati...became 1st Giants pitcher to post shutout for 1st Major League win since Mike Remlinger June 15, 1991 over Pittsburgh at Candlestick...carried no hitter into 7th before allowing leadoff single by D'Angelo Jimenez...ended up limiting Reds to 3 hits on evening, while equaling then career-best with 9 strikeouts...was named NL Player of Week for Aug. 2-8...logged 2nd complete game Sept. 22 in 5-1 triumph over Houston...locked horns with Roy Oswalt...surrendered solo HR to Jeff Kent in 2nd before limiting Astros to 4 hits over final 7 frames...went 6-for-26 (.231) with 2 runs scored and 2 2Bs in his last 11 starts...posted 7-5 record with 4.13 ERA (41er, 89.1ip) in 17 starts for Fresno.
2003
Posted finest professional campaign and was rewarded with initial Major League call-up in Sept...combined to go 10-6 with 4.39 ERA (67er, 137.1ip) in 27 starts for double-A Norwich and triple-A Fresno...established career highs in every category during 1st injury free full season...struck out 110 batters, while walking 50 in minors...10 wins finished 3rd among Giants farmhands...spent majority of season at Norwich, going 9-6 with 4.72 ERA in 23 starts with 2 complete games...was promoted to Fresno Aug. 12...for Grizzlies, was 1-0 with 2.37 ERA (5er, 16.0ip) in 4 starts...had contract purchased prior to Sept. 1 game in Arizona...made Major League debut Sept. 5 vs. Arizona, working scoreless 9th of eventual 8-1 Giants setback...tossed 6.1-scoreless innings over 4 relief appearances with San Francisco, retiring 21 of 24 batters faced...picked up 1st big league hit in season finale Sept. 28 vs. LA, drilling single off Paul Shuey in 6th inning...crushed ball off left field wall...pitched for Grand Canyon Rafters in Arizona Fall League following season.
2002
Logged 1st action at single-A level, spending season with San Jose...was limited to 15 games (12 starts) with left shoulder tendinitis...still managed to log 6-5 record with 2.15 ERA (14er, 58.2ip)...got off to strong start and earned SJ's Player of Month honor for April by virtue of 2-1 ledger with 1.13 ERA (3er, 24.0ip), 24 strikeouts and 7 walks in 5 starts...however, made just 3 appearances over next 3 months...returned from shelf July 28 and was back in form for remainder of year, combining to go 4-1 with 1.59 ERA (5er, 28.1ip) in 7 games (6 starts)...was again named San Jose's Player of Month for August, fashioning 4-1 ledger with 2.01 ERA (5er, 22.1ip).

Hit ground running in professional debut, going 1-1 with 3.60 ERA in 8 games (7 starts) for rookie-league Salem-Keizer...struck out 28, while surrendering just 8 free passes in 28.0 innings...helped Volcanoes win Northwest League championship.
