John Phillip Rheinecker
John Philip Rheinecker was signed by A's scout Jim Pranski...graduated from Gibault Catholic High School (Waterloo, IL) in 1997...attended Belleville Area Community College and was drafted by the Seattle organization in 1998...did not sign and attended Southwest Missouri State...led the Missouri Valley Conference with a 2.85 ERA in 2000 and a 2.27 ERA in 2001...struck out 106 batters in 91 innings in 2001...was the A's third pick in the 2001 draft as he was selected as a compensation pick following the first round for the loss of free agent Kevin Appier to the New York Mets.
2006
Was 4-5 with a 6.03 ERA in 13 starts and 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA after moving into the bullpen late in the season...was 4-3 with a 3.96 ERA in his first nine starts...did not allow an earned run to score in his last four relief appearances...over his last 13 appearances/starts at the Major League level, he was 2-4 (27 ER/30 1/3 IP)...had three different stays with the Rangers...made 15 starts for Oklahoma (AAA), going 4-5 with 2.52 ERA, 68 strikeouts and 24 walks...prior to this season, he had made only 2 relief appearances in his professional career, both coming in the Minor Leagues.
2005
Was off to a great start at Triple-A Sacramento before tearing a tendon in his left middle finger in early May...went 4-0 with a 1.77 ERA in seven starts for the River Cats but was placed on the Disabled List on May 13 and missed the remainder of the season...did not allow a home run in 45.2 innings and held the opposition to a .181 opponents batting average and a .250 slugging percentage...his opponents average included a mark of .158 (19 for 120) against right-handed hitters and .250 (10 for 40) against left-handers...opponents average dropped to .171 (6 for 35) with runners in scoring position, including .133 (2 for 15) with RISP and two outs...had a 6.43 ERA (5 er in 7.0 ip) and .393 (11 for 28) opponents batting average in the first inning and a 0.93 ERA (4 er in 38.2 ip) and .136 (18 for 132) opponents average from the second inning on...the River Cats were 6-1 in his starting assignments...he tossed seven or more innings in five of his seven starts, allowed three runs or fewer in every start and walked two batters or fewer five times...was the Opening Day starter for Sacramento on April 7 against Portland and combined with Britt Reames on a 7-0 shutout...tossed a season high 8.0 innings and picked up the win in that game (3 h, 2 bb, 3 so)...struck out a season high six batters in 6.0 innings in his next start on April 12 against Tacoma...his only start under six innings came on April 17 at Portland when he allowed three runs in 3.0 innings but ended up with a no decision...tossed 7.0 shutout innings on April 28 against Tucson (3 h, 3 bb, 4 so) but ended up with a no decision in a 2-1 Sacramento win...his final start came on May 8 at Las Vegas when he did not walk a batter for the only time in 2005 (7.2 ip, 3 h, 3 r, 1 er, 5 so).
2004
Was 11-9 with a 4.44 ERA in 28 games, 27 starts, at Triple-A Sacramento...the 11 wins matched his career high from the previous season and tied for fifth most in the A's farm system...also ranked fifth in the A's farm system in strikeouts (129) and eighth in ERA...was third in the Pacific Coast League in innings pitched (172.1) and tied for third in strikeouts...ranked 11th in all of minor league baseball in innings pitched...had career highs in losses (9), home runs (22), walks (51), hit batters (15) and wild pitches (8)...led Sacramento in games started, tied for the team lead in wins and ranked second in innings pitched and strikeouts...allowed a .283 opponents batting average which broke down to .242 (40 for 165) and two home runs against left handed hitters and .296 (154 for 520) and 20 home runs against right-handers...opponents average dropped to .263 (46 for 175) with runners in scoring position, including .211 (15 for 71) with RISP and two outs...the opposition was 1 for 10 (.100) with the bases loaded...posted a 6.33 ERA (19 er in 27.0 ip) in the first inning of a start, 3.76 (54 er in 129.1 ip) in innings two through six and 6.75 (12 er in 16.0 ip) after that...allowed six of his 22 home runs in the first inning...began the season by pitching in relief of Rich Harden on April 10 against Edmonton in Yuma and took the loss (3.0 ip, 4 h, 2 r, 2 er, 2 bb, 2 so)...then spent the rest of the season in the starting rotation...tossed six or more innings in 20 of his 27 starts, allowed three runs or fewer 12 times and walked two batters or fewer 19 times...went 0-2 with a 7.90 ERA (12 er in 13.2 ip) over his first three games, two starts, before tossing 6.0 shutout innings (2 h, 2 bb, 4 so) for his first win in the A's 6-0 victory at Las Vegas on April 25...lost two of his next three starts and was 1-4 with a 6.35 ERA (24 er in 34.0 ip) over his first seven outings through May 11...then defeated Iowa 13-3 on May 16 to start an eight-game winning streak that lasted 11 starts through July 10...posted a 3.13 ERA (25 er in 72.0 ip) during the streak...his best outing came on June 14 against Fresno when he tossed a season high 8.0 shutout innings (3 h, 2 so) and picked up the win in the River Cats 5-0 victory...struck out a season high nine batters in his next start on June 19, a 6-2 win over Tacoma...finished June with a 4-0 record and a 2.79 ERA (12 er in 38.2 ip) in six starts...had has winning streak snapped on July 16 at Tucson and went 2-5 with a 4.88 ERA (36 er in 66.1 ip) over his final 10 starts...had a season high three-game losing streak from July 16 to August 1 (12 er in 26.2 ip, 4.05 ERA)...was 1-1 with a 6.57 ERA (12.1 ip, 19 h, 10 r, 9 er, 4 bb, 10 so) in two postseason starts for the River Cats.
2003
Spent the first four months of the season at Double-A Midland before a promotion to Triple-A Sacramento at the end of July...combined for an 11-6 record and a 4.54 ERA in 29 starts at both levels...had career highs in wins and innings pitched (180.1) and matched his best in starts, complete games (1) and shutouts (1)...led all minor league pitchers in hits allowed (233) and ranked eighth in innings pitched...tied for fifth in the A's farm system in wins...allowed a .311 opponents batting average which included .313 (56 for 179) against left-handers and .311 (177 for 570) against right-handers...opponents hit .330 (64 for 194) with runners in scoring position...tossed at least six innings in 21 of his 29 starts and walked one batter or fewer 17 times...was 9-6 with a 4.74 ERA in 23 starts at Midland...finished second on the Rockhounds staff in wins, starts, innings (142.1) and strikeouts (89)...allowed a .313 opponents batting average which increased to .338 with runners in scoring position... was undefeated over the first two months of the season, going 5-0 despite a 6.06 ERA in 11 starts in April and May...then went 5-6 but had a 3.71 ERA in 12 starts in June and July...allowed a season high 15 hits in 6.2 innings on May 16 against El Paso but picked up the win in the Rockhounds 15-7 victory...tossed his only complete game and shutout of the season, a seven inning five-hitter in a 1-0 win on June 6 at Wichita in the first game of a doubleheader...finished the Double-A portion of his campaign with a four-game losing streak from July 14 to 29 (12 er in 26.2 ip, 4.05 ERA)...was promoted to Sacramento on July 31 and was 2-0 with a 3.79 ERA in six starts with the River Cats...allowed a .303 opponents batting average including .348 against left-handers and .284 against right-handers...best Triple-A outing came on August 24 against Tucson when he tossed 6.2 shutout innings for the win (5 h, 3 bb, 7 so)...then went 2-0 with a 2.92 ERA in two postseason starts for Sacramento (12.1 ip, 10 h, 4 r, 4 er, 3 bb, 8 so).
2002
Began the season at Single-A Visalia but was promoted to Double-A Midland on May 20 after going 3-0 with a 2.31 ERA in nine starts...was a combined 10-7 with a 3.07 ERA in 29 games, all starts, with both clubs...ranked second in the A's organization in ERA and was fourth with 162 strikeouts...walked just 34 batters for a strikeout to walk ratio of 4.8 to 1...issued just 24 free passes in 128.0 innings at Midland, an average of 1.62 per nine innings which ranked second among Southern League starters...also ranked tied for second in the SL in shutouts (1), fifth in baserunners per nine innings among starters (11.81) and eighth in ERA (3.38)...was just 7-7 in his 20 starts with the Rockhounds...finished second on the Midland pitching staff in starts, innings and strikeouts (100) and tied for second in losses...overall, allowed a .258 opponents batting average, including .239 against left handed hitters and .227 with runners in scoring position...tossed at least six innings in 20 of his 29 starts, allowed two earned runs or fewer 17 times and walked one batter or fewer 21 times...began the year at Visalia and held left handed hitters to a .114 batting average...tossed 6.0 shutout innings in his first start on April 4 against Bakersfield for his first professional win (4 h, 7 so)...struck out a season high 11 in his second start on April 9 against Lake Elsinore...tossed eight shutout innings in his first Double-A start, a win on May 20 against San Antonio (4 h, 1 bb, 7 so)...tossed his first career complete game and shutout, a five-hitter in the Rockhounds 2-0 win against San Antonio on July 9 (1 bb, 3 so).
2001
Signed with the A's on June 30 but did not pitch immediately and was eventually placed on the Vancouver disabled list on July 20 with a strained left forearm...activated on July 29 and went 0-1 with a 1.59 ERA in six games, five starts...was promoted to Modesto on August 25 and made two starts, going 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA...combined at both stops for a 0-2 record and a 3.03 ERA in eight games, seven starts...allowed a .192 opponents batting average and just one home run in 32.2 innings...best outing came with Vancouver on August 16 against Salem-Keizer when he tossed a season high 6.2 shutout innings (2 h, 2 bb, 5 so).
