Valverde started the season as Arizona's closer and converted 14 saves in 17 opportunities over the first two months of the season. He later lost the job to Jorge Julio, who was acquired from the Mets. After spending six weeks with Triple-A Tucson to regain his confidence, Valverde earned back his old role. He finished the year with a career-high 5.84 ERA and posted a 2-3 mark. He led the team with a career-high 18 saves in 22 opportunities.

retroactive to June 14 with right shoulder tendinitis...it was later determined that he had a small tear in the labrum in his

4 hits and 3 runs to the Rockies on April 6, but over his next 9 outings, he limited the opposition to a .100 average (3-

Following a season that was cut short due to an elbow injury, Jose returned to the mound having moved up another notch in Arizona's farm system to Tucson (AAA) ... he struggled at the outset, going 0-2 with no saves and a 14.04 ERA (16 ER in 10.0 IP) in an 11-game stretch from April 6-May 29, though a back strain landed him on the disabled list for 3 weeks of that span (May 4-24) ... once healthy his numbers improved dramatically, going 1-0 with 5 saves in 17 games from June 1-July 11, limiting opponents to a .143 average (9-for-63) and fanning 30 batters in 18.2 frames ... he finished 12 of the 17 games, which included 15 scoreless appearances while holding opposing batters hitless in 12 of those affairs ... he notched his first victory of the season on June 3 at Las Vegas, closing out the game with 2.0 shutout innings ...
