Full name is William Hall, III...graduated from Nettleton (Miss.) High School in 1998...served as a special playoff analyst on ESPN's Cold Pizza following the 2006 season...he appeared in an episode of The Young and the Restless in 2007 with three other Brewers teammates...he took part in a youth program in December 2007, escorting children from Milwaukee's Beckum-Stapleton Little League on a day trip to Kansas City to visit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum...he earned the Michael Harrison Award for Community Service, presented by the Brewers, in both 2004 and 2006...he was the Brewers' 2006 nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award and received the Brewers 2006 Good Guy Award from the Milwaukee chapter of the BBWAA...he has participated in activities to benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the RBI program.
2011
Split the season between the Houston and San Francisco organizations, combining to bat .211 (39-for-185) with 9 doubles, 2HR and 14RBI in 62 games... h started 40 games at 2B for the Astros, and hit .224 (33-for-147) before being released on 6/3...h signed by the Giants on 6/11 where he appeared in just 16 games (.158, 6-for-38)...left game on 7/7 after suffering an injury to his lower left leg when San Diego's Jason Bartlett slid into second base on a steal attempt... was placed on 15-day disabled list on 7/8 with a laceration to his lower left leg (needed seven stitches to close the gash)...was reinstated from the D.L. on 7/28 and was designated for assignment...was outrighted to Triple-A Fresno on 8/2 where he hit .274 (31-for-113) in 31 games over the rest of the year.

In his first season with Boston, made appearances at every position except catcher and first base, including 51 at second base (38 starts), six at shortstop (three starts), five at third base (two starts), 55 in left field (42 starts), seven in center (six starts), nine in right (five starts) and one at pitcher...joined Jack Rothrock (1928) and Steve Lyons (1991) as the only Red Sox ever to appear in at least one game at each of those positions in a single season...became the first Red Sox to make starts at second base, shortstop, third base, left field, center field and right field in one season since Damian Jackson in 2003...was the third Sox player ever with at least 350 plate appearances while appearing at seven defensive positions in one season, also Jeff Frye (1997) and Jack Rothrock (1928 and 1931)...hit 18 homers, his second-most in a single season behind 35 in 2006...among Major Leaguers with 350 at-bats or less, ranked tied for fouth in homers...joined Ted Williams (28 HR in 1950, 28 in 1955, and 29 in 1960) as the only Red Sox ever to hit at least 18 homers in a season that consisted of no more than 344 at-bats...went .364 in the pinch (4x11) with two walks...hit a pinch-hit homer on May 14 at DET, the fifth of his career...debuted with the Red Sox on April 11 at KC, starting at shortstop and also playing left and right field...marked the first time in his career playing three positions in a game...became the only Red Sox since the stat was tracked in 1920 to play each of those positions in the same game...was the first Major Leaguer to do it since Detroit's Shane Halter played every position on Oct. 1, 2000 vs. MIN...played three positions again on Aug. 20 vs. TOR (left field, second base and shortstop), also the first Sox to play each of those spots in a contest...made his first professional pitching appearance on May 28 vs. KC, tossing a 1-2-3 9th inning...was the second position player to pitch for the Sox in 2010, also Jonathan Van Every on May 8 vs. NYY... scored a career-high four runs on June 3 vs. OAK and also collected a season-high four hits, his most since four on July 3, 2006 with the Brewers vs. CIN...joined Johnny Damon (July 23, 2002 vs. TB, G1) as the only Red Sox since 1920 with at least four runs, four hits, one homer and one stolen base in a game...collected his 400th and 401st career RBI with a two-run homer in the 2nd inning on July 9 at TOR...finished that game with a season-high four RBI (matched on Aug. 11 at TOR) and three extra-base hits (two doubles, one homer)...tied for the team lead with six home runs in August (also Adrian Beltre), his most in any month since hitting seven in April 2008...ranked seventh in the AL with a club-best 12.00 AB/HR (72 AB) during the month...matched his career high with two homers on Aug. 11 at TOR (fourth time, first since April 4, 2008 vs. SF with MIL)...hit safely in 14 of his final 17 home games at .367 (18x49), including season-long, seven-game home hit streaks from Aug. 22-Sept. 7 and Sept. 18-Oct. 2... recorded hits in 10 of his last 12 games on the season, hitting .361 (13x36)...the stretch began with a season-high, seven-game hit streak from Sept. 18-26...tallied a career-high two outfield assists, both from left field, on Sept. 20 vs. BAL...stole a career-high- tying two bases (6th time), drove in the tying run and scored the go-ahead run in the 9th in an eventual 4-3, 10-inning loss at NYY on Sept. 26.
