Earned Class 5A All-State honours by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association as a junior in '97 (others on the 5A squad: Josh Beckett, Vernon Wells)... Went 11-1 with a 1.45 ERA and batted .427 with 36 RBI... Led Round Rock High to 5A State Championship... Earned Honorable Mention accolades on the 1998 USA Today All-USA baseball team.

With Washington: Hit .198 (32-for-162) with 6 home runs, 22 RBI, 6 doubles and 2 triples in 103 games (39 starts)with the Nationals...was designated for assignment on August 18 and outrighted to Triple-A Columbus of theInternational League, August 22...went 2-for-3 with a double in his first start with Washington on May 6 at CHI...hit first career grand slam off Randy Flores to bust open an eventual 7-2 victory on May 27 at STL...with 2 outs in 6th inning and tying and winning runs on base, made dramatic diving catch to protect 4-3 lead in eventual 5-4 win on July 7 vs. MIL...hit 3-run homer off Jason Jennings, July 18 vs. HOU, to provide decisive runs in 7-6 win...after stint with Columbus, contract was selected by Washington on September 4...hit .357 (5-for-14) with one homer, 3 RBI and 4 runs in 17 September contests...when appearing, the Nationals went 55-48. • Spent entire season on the AA Greenville roster with exception of a one-game promotion to Atlanta on April 28.
• On DL May 23-June 17 due to surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.
• Named Greenville's Player of the Year after finishing 1st on club in RBI (62), runs (57), and walks (68).
• Hit safely in 10 of 11 games from April 6-17, going 13x38 (.342) with 1 HR, 6 doubles and 9 RBI.
• Went 3 x 4 August 1 at Chattanooga with 1 3B, 1 HR and 4 RBI.

While playing for Class A Myrtle Beach, ranked 5th in the Carolina League with a .374 OB% and T6th with a .287 BA... Named to the Carolina League All-Star team...Compiled an 11-game hitting streak April 27-May 9 (17 x 41, .415) raising his BA from .190 to .283...Went 11 x 18 (.611) with 7 RBI in 4 games May 18-22...Batted .464 (13 x 28, 2 HR, 6 RBI) over 8 games Aug. 7-15...Ranked 4th in the Braves organization with 22 steals.

2000

Hit a grand slam 5/20 at Frederick. Had two seven-game hitting streaks, the first he hit .346 (9-for-26, 2 HR, 9 RBI) and .480 the other (12-for-25, HR, 2 3B). Tied for third in the Carolina League in triples. Hit .370 (10-for-27, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 4 SB) over seven-game stretch over May 20-28.

1999

Listed by Baseball America as being the organization's 12th best prospect. Rated by Baseball America as having the Best Outfield Arm in the Braves' minor leagues. Led the team in hits and doubles. Finished second on the squad in base on balls and third in steals. Had seven assists from his outfield position. Had an 11-game hit streak from 6/25 through 7/14 (17-for-35, .486).
