TRANSACTIONS: Signed as a non-drafted free agent on November 15, 1996 by scouts Arturo DeFreites and Fred Ferreira...Promoted to the major league roster on November 20, 2000. MAJOR LEAGUE SERVICE: Rookie, none. 2000 SEASON: A fast and athletic leadoff hitter and center fielder at A-Cape Fear (A), Ruan finished second in the South Atlantic League in stolen bases (64) and hits (165), fourth in triples (10) and tied for fifth in runs scored (95)...Led the league in official at-bats (574) and was fourth in games played (134)...Led the Crocs with 20 infield hits...An outstanding defensive player with good range and a cannon for an arm, posted 18 assists for the second consecutive season...Was charged with only three errors in 131 games in the outfield...Ranked by Baseball America the 11th-best prospect in the Sally League and the ninth-best in the Expos' organization...Continued his development with Estrellas in the Dominican Republic Winter League. Ruan posted an impressive 23-game hitting streak, May 29-June 23, the longest in the league in 2000 and the longest of his young career, to raise his average from .316 to .339, going 38 for 98 (.388) with nine doubles, three triples, 15 runs and eight steals during the streak...Batted .339 in May (43 for 127) and .348 (40 for 115) in June...Went to the league's All-Star game on June 20 sporting a .337 BA...Wore down afterwards hitting just .230 the rest of the way...His average dipped to .298 at the end of July...Surged with a 13-hitting streak, July 29-August 15 (19-for-60)...Had four four-hit games and 12 three-hit games on the season...Hit two triples with four RBI on April 16 vs Charleston...Collected four hits and four runs on May 17 vs Hickory and four hits and four RBI on June 2 vs Hagerstown...Stole three bases in a game four times and two bases 10 times. CAREER: Ruan made his pro debut in 1997 with Mendoza in the rookie-level Dominican Summer League and led his team in average (.348) and stolen bases (33)...Strugged with the bat in his next two seasons in the United States...In 1998 in the Florida Gulf Coast League, finished first among outfielders with a .991 fielding percentage...Played five games with A-Jupiter, June 16-19...In 1999 at A-Cape Fear, finished second on the team with 29 stolen bases and ranked among the league leaders in outfield assits with 18...Has just two homers in 305 games in the U.S.
