Began the year by pitching for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic...went 1-1 with a 3.72 ERA (4er, 9.2ip) in two starts before the U.S. was eliminated in the second round. Earned his first career WBC victory in his first start on March 9 vs. Italy after tossing 4.0 innings and allowing two runs on six hits in a 6-2 win. Took the hill in an elimination game against Puerto Rico in round two on March 15 and suffered the defeat, l gging 5.2 frames and allowing two runs on four hits. Re lly struggled in his first eight regular season starts, going 1-4 with an 8.06 ERA (37er, 41.1ip)...had just one quality start in that stretch and his 37 earned runs were the most among all qualifying pitchers in the Majors. After allowing a season-high eight runs in just 2.0 innings of work on May 15 at Toronto, he bounced back and was having one of his best starts of the seas n on May 20 vs. Washington, tossing 5.0-shutout innings...however, was hit by a pitch on his right hand while batting against Nationals' RHP Craig Stammen and X-rays later showed a dislocated joint in the pinky finger of his pitching hand and it was broken above and bleow the finger. Underwent surgery on his fractured ight hand on May 21 at Stanford Hospital...the urgery was performed by Dr. Tim McAdams...had five pins inserted in the finger to stabilize the area. Began a minor league rehab assignment July 23 in Arizona and after making four rehab starts (one with rookie-level Arizona, one with single-A San Jose, two at double-A Richmond), he was reinstated off the 60-day disabled list on Aug. 9 after missing a total of 69 big league games. Prior to getting injured, was 2-4 with a 7.19 ERA (37er, 46.1ip) in nine starts...pitched better when he came back from his injury by going 2-2 with a 4.55 figure (29er,57.1ip) in his final 10 outings. 28 of his 73 runs (38.4%) allowed came in the 5th inning. Right-handed batters hit .327 (73-for-223) off him, which was the second highest figure in the National League (min. of 200 batters faced) and he allowed a .364 (36-for- 99) avg. against with runners in scoring position, which ranked as the second-highest mark in the NL (min. of 75 opponent at-bats).

Posted a 14-9 record with a 3.37 ERA (71er, 189.2ip) and 158 strikeouts in 31 starts. Was the NL ERA leader as late as Aug. 12, fashioning a 2.27 figure, however over his last 10 starts, he posted a 6.75 ERA, raising his season figure from 2.27 to his final 3.37 mark, rising more than a full point...he finished the season ranked 11th in the NL in ERA. His 14 victories, 31 starts and 158 strikeouts in 2012 were all career-highs. His 3.37 ERA in 2012 trailed only Matt Cain among Giants'
starting pitchers. Tossed 6.0-or-more innings in his first 21 outings to begin the season, tying Atlee Hammaker for the third-longest streak to begin a campaign in Giants history (since 1918). Missed the first four weeks of spring training and began the season on the 15-day disabled list with a strained lower back, which he injured while doing squats in the first week of February back home...appeared in just one Cactus League game and several minor league games before the Giants broke camp. Fashioned the lowest ERA in the Majors during the month of May (1.51 ERA), allowing just seven earned runs in 41.2 innings...allowed just one earned run-or-fewer in five of his last six contests in May.
