Michael John Bell
Is a third-generation major league baseball player...grandfather Gus, played for Cincinnati (1953-61)...father Buddy, played 18 seasons in the majors, managed in Detroit (1996-98) and Colorado (2000-02) and currently serves as the bench coach in Cleveland...brother David plays for the Philadelphia Phillies and brother, Ricky, plays in the Dodgers organization at Triple-A Las Vegas in 2004...graduated from Moeller High School in Cincinnati, the same school that produced his father, Buddy, as well as Ken Griffey Jr. and Barry Larkin...resides in Chandler, Ariz. with wife Kelly and son Luke.

2004

  • Spent the entire season at Triple-A Charlotte in the White Sox organization.
  • Belted a career-high 25 home runs and drove in 80 runs in 124 games, batting .235 (107-456).
  • Appeared in 81 games at first base, 35 at third base and eight as designated hitter. 32 of his first 34 starts of the season came at third base (other two at DH).
  • Strung together a season-high 10-game hitting streak from 7/30-8/9 (.425, 17-40, 5 2B, 2 HR, 9 RBI).
  • Collected a season-high four hits in a 4-4 effort on 8/1 vs. Durham.
  • Accounted for all four runs in a 4-2 win on 4/30 vs. Louisville thanks to 1st inning grand slam off pitcher Bubba Nelson.
  • Hit safely in 15-of-18 games from 4/23-5/10 (.318, 21-66).
  • Batted .284 (25-88) in 24 games in August.
  • Had two hits in his final 30 at-bats, with one being a two-run HR, dropping his batting average from .246 to .235.

    2003

    Spent entire season at Triple-A Tucson in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization...finished third on the team in doubles (26), tied for third in RBI (70) and fourth in home runs (11)...hit .346 (72-208) at home and .178 (37-208) with seven home runs on the road...hit .333 with runners in scoring position and .385 with the bases loaded...was named to the Pacific Coast League midseason All-Star team...appeared in 78 games at second base, 17 at first, 14 at third base and 10 in left field.

    2002

    Played for Colorado Springs (AAA) in the Rockies system...hit .354 (29-82) vs. left-handers and .247 (39-158) vs. righthanders... hit safely in 23 of 25 games from 4/25-7/28, going 38-99 (.384)...was on the disabled list with a left hand injury from 5/13-7/21.

    2001

    Split season between Single-A Salem and Colorado Springs (AAA) in the Rockies system...combined to hit .285 (95- 333) with 13 home runs and 53 RBI at the two levels...tied for fourth on the team at Colorado Springs with 13 home runs...hit .400 (28-70) vs. left-handed pitching...homered twice on 8/21 vs. Salt Lake...suffered broken left forearm at end of spring training...was on Colorado Springs disabled list from 4/5-5/28, including a four-game rehabilitation stint at Salem.

    2000

    Appeared in 115 games at Louisville (AAA) in the Reds system...finished second on the team with 22 home runs...made his major league debut on 7/20 at HOU -- in doing so, the Bell family became the first in major league history with three generations playing for the same team...his grandfather, Gus, and father, Buddy, also played for the Reds...recorded his first major league hit (off Brian Anderson) in first career start on 7/23 vs. ARI...hit first major league home run on 9/2 vs. MON, a pinch-hit solo shot off Steve Kline.

    1999

    Played a career-low 39 games at Triple-A Norfolk...suffered torn ligaments in three fingers on his right hand...underwent surgery on 6/1 and missed remainder of the season.

    1998

    Hit a combined .270 (103-382) with 17 home runs and 78 RBI in 113 games at Norfolk (AAA), Single-A St. Lucie and Double-A Binghamton in the New York Mets organization.

    1997

    Split time between Oklahoma City (AAA) and Tulsa (AA) in the Rangers system...spent majority of season at Oklahoma City...combined to hit .248 (112-451) with 13 home runs and 61 RBI at the two stops.

    1996

    Spent entire season at Double-A Tulsa...led Texas League third basemen in fielding percentage (.936), putouts (90), assists (277), total chances (107) and double plays (28)...played for Tempe in the Arizona Fall League.

    1995

    Appeared in a career-high 129 games at Single-A Charlotte.

    1994

    Recorded a career-high 16 stolen bases at Single-A Charleston (SC).

    1993

    Made his pro debut with the Rangers in the rookie Gulf Coast League...led the GCL in games (60), hits (73), total bases (107) and extra-base hits (22)...was selected to the Baseball AmericaShort Season All-Star Team...was chosen by Texas with a sandwich pick (30th overall) in the June free agent draft...was recommended/signed by Andy Johnson and J.I. Dreyer.
