His 284 2/3 IP over the last three years are the most among any reliever in the Major Leagues. Shields held opponents to a .217 average, and left-handers only hit .207 against him. He has 31 wins in relief during his tenure with the Angels, which puts him second on their all-time list (Dave LaRoche, 34). Shields finished the year with a 7-7 record, a 2.87 ERA and two saves. He provided scoreless outings in 54 of his 74 appearances and didn't allow a hit in 31 of those games. Shields retired 56 of 74 first batters faced. He had a sub-2.00 ERA until June 28. Shields threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings for the United States in the World Baseball Classic.
