His 15 wins were the most he's ever had with the Giants and the most he's had in a campaign since winning 16 games with the A's in 2006. The Giants went 21-11 (.656) in his starts, matching Matt Cain for the most club victories in his starts. The Giants won his last 11 outings of the season...the last time SF won 11-consecutive starts by one of their pitchers was when they won 11-straight when Bill Swift started from April 6-June 27, 1992 (STATS, LLC). Went 7-0 with a 3.92 ERA (27er, 62.0ip) in his last 11 starts of the season...the Giants last lost a Zito start on Aug. 2 vs. New York-NL. Finished the season with a seven-game win streak which marked his longest win streak in a Giants uniform and his longest since an eight-game win streak from June 28-Aug. 4, 2005 (with Oakland). Received an average of 5.96 runs of support in his starts, the highest average on the Giants' staff and the third highest figure in the NL. Night before Opening Day was in two-car wreck in West Hollywood, traveling through an intersection on Sunset Blvd., when taxi ran light while trying to make left turn... was examined by head and neck specialist at Cedars Sinai Medical Center and X-rays came back negative ... Pitching 4 days after his violent collision, Zito showed little effects of whiplash, allowing just 3 runs on 3 hits through 6.0 innings in his 1st start of season on April 3 at Los Angeles-NL...did not receive decision ... 2 starts later on April 16 at Arizona, left in 2nd inning after fielding pop out bunt from pitcher Joe Saunders...made one pitch after that and after team athletic trainer Dave Groeschner examined him, he was removed from game... was later diagnosed with right mid foot sprain (X-rays came back negative), that placed him on 15-day disabled list next day...his 12-year career streak of never missing start due to injury came to an end as he made his 1st-ever appearance on disabled list ... Went 14-13 with 3.86 ERA in 35 starts...reached double-digits in victories for 5th-consecutive season, but established career high for losses...tied for AL lead in starts, while ranking 2nd in opponents batting avg. (.221), 3rd in innings pitched (228.1) and 5th in strikeouts (171)...also paced junior circuit with career-high 3,805 pitches thrown, most by Oakland hurler since Dave Stewart had 3,925 in 1991...struggled in season's opening and closing months, going 0-4 with 6.60 ERA in 5 April starts and 2-3 with 6.50 mark during 6 Sept. assignments...however, went 12-6 with 2.77 ERA and .197 avg. against in 24 starts May-August...A's scored total of 12 runs while he was pitching during his 13 losses...forged 14-2 mark (.875) in 21 starts with at least 2 runs of support...did not commit an error in 46 total chances, while ranking 6th among AL pitchers with 34 assists...made 1st career Opening Day start, taking ball April 4 at Baltimore...recorded 1st ML hit June 7 at Washington, singling off Tony Armas, Jr....won 8-consecutive starts June 28-Aug. 4, compiling 2.33 ERA and .199 avg. against...earned AL Pitcher of Month honors for July after going 6-0 with 2.51 ERA in 6 starts.
