Melvin Mora...He and his wife, Gisel, have a daughter, Tatiana, and quintuplets Christian, Matthew David, Genesis, Rebekah and Jada Priscilla...Graduated from Libertador High School in Valencia, Venezuela...Was an amateur boxer...played organized soccer for the Venezuelan National Soccer League from 1981-90 and traveled to play in Nicaragua and Argentina...also played professional soccer...Grew up in Venezuela and played baseball with former big league outfielder Richard Hidalgo...Began the Melvin Mora Foundation in 2005 to fund educational, medical and other needs in his native Venezuela...sponsored a home run derby in Valencia, Venezuela in December 2005 with Hidalgo, Miguel Tejada, Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Guillen, Edgardo Alfonzo, Bobby Abreu and Johan Santana among the participants...Mora and his wife have served as sponsor's of Baltimore's Mt. Led the American League with a .419 on-base percentage...Became the 3rd Oriole to lead the league in that category, joining Eddie Murray (.410 in '84) and Frank Robinson (.410 in '66)...Had the 5th-highest OBP in club history. Also placed among AL leaders in slugging percentage (5th, .562), runs (T6th, 111), doubles (T6th, 40), hits (8th, 187), extra-base hits (T8th, 68) and total bases (9th, 309). Was 5th in the AL with a .981 on-base/slugging percentage...Was the 5th-highest total in club history. Hit safely in 110 of 140 games on the season and reached base in 125 games...Was 3rd in the American League with 60 multi-hit games. He and teammate Miguel Tejada were 2 of 7 major league players to hit over .300, have 40 or more doubles and have at least 100 runs and RBI...The only other player in Orioles history to accomplish the feat was Cal Ripken in his MVP season of 1983 (.318, 47 2B, 121 runs and 102 RBI). Hit his first career grand slam on June 4 off Tampa Bay's Victor Zambrano...Also matched his career high with 3 walks in the game. Scored a run in 8 straight games, May 21-29...Scored a career-high 4 runs on June 9 vs. Arizona...Led the American League with 57 runs in 62 games through June 20 before injuries sidelined him for most of the next month. Left the game in the first inning on June 17 at Los Angeles with a sprained ligament in his left foot and missed 11 of the next 15 games...Was placed on the disabled list on July 5 with a strained right hamstring suffered on July 2 at Philadelphia. Was activated on July 18 and played in every game the remainder of the season. Led all major league players with 31 RBI in August, tied for the 3rd highest RBI total in a month in club history. Established a new career high with 20 home runs when he homered twice on August 9 against Texas...Also had a pair of home runs in the first game of a doubleheader on July 22 at Boston, which was one of six 4-RBI games on the season. Had a season-high 14-game hitting streak, May 18-June 1, batting .419 (26-62)...Also had a 12-game hitting streak and a 10-game streak in the second half. Matched his career high with 4 hits twice - April 15 at Boston and April 29 against Seattle. Led the club with 11 hit by pitches, the 4th straight season he led the team...Has been hit 61 times in 4 1/2 seasons with the Orioles, the 3rd highest total in club history behind Brady Anderson (148) and Cal Ripken (66). Has been hit 57 times in the last 4 seasons, tied with Jason Giambi for 3rd-most among AL players in that time behind David Eckstein (76) and Carlos Delgado (61).
2003
Got off to the best start of his five-year Major League career ... Hit in 23 straight games from May 17-June 12 ... Was leading the American League with a .361 average before getting hit on the hand by a Greg Maddux pitch on June 20 ... Though the hand wasn't broken, lingering pain caused his numbers to drop, and eventually forced him to the DL in August ... Was named to his first All-Star team ... Played his final game of the season on Sept. 13 after suffering a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee.

Played a total of 149 games at five different positions for the Orioles and established career-highs with 19 home runs and 16 stolen bases...Led the Orioles with 114 starts from the leadoff spot...Took over for the injured Jerry Hairston in the lead-off spot on April 12 and hit at the top of the order in 114 of his next 121 starts through September 5...Batted leadoff in just 2 of his final 16 starts of the year...Reached base in 118 of 145 games with an at-bat on the season...Drew 20 walks and was hit by the pitch 6 times in April and drew 20 walks and 4 HBPs in August...Aside from those two months, he drew a combined 30 walks and 10 HBPs the other four months of the season...Started at 5 different positions - LF, CF, RF, 2B and SS - as well as DH...Played 10 straight games, May 2-12, without starting at the same position consecutive times - 3 at 2B, 3 in CF, 3 in LF and 1 at SS...Had a career-high 9-game hitting streak, June 13-22, batting .314 (11-35) with 8 runs scored...Hit .311 (33-106) over his final 26 games of the first half, raising his average from .240 to .265...Had his first career 2-home run game on June 7 vs. Los Angeles...Had a career-high 5 RBI on June 10 vs. San Diego, hitting a 2-run home run and 3-run double...Hit his 4th leadoff home run of the season on August 5 at Toronto...Led off games with a home run on June 28 and 29 vs. Philly...Hit his first career leadoff home run on June 20 at Arizona off Randy Johnson...Was hit by the pitch 20 times, 2nd most in the American League...Tied a major league record by being hit 3 times on July 18 at Toronto...Was the 22nd time in the majors and 7th by an American Leaguer...Served a 3-game suspension (reduced from 4 games), September 13-15, in Boston for his role in a bench-clearing brawl vs. the Red Sox on July 28 at Fenway Park...Batted .144 (16-111) over his final 34 games of the season...Had consecutive 2-hit games, September 16-17, his only multi-hit games after August 23...Went hitless in 7 straight games (20 at-bats), September 5-12...Went 2-for-29 over his final 9 games of the year...Led the Orioles and was tied for 10th in AL with 9 outfield assists...Had 9 putouts in left field on July 14 vs. Oakland...Missed 2 games, April 21 and 23, to return to his native Venezuela following the death of his brother...Missed the game on July 21 due to the death of his brother-in-law in Brooklyn, NY...Missed first 3 weeks of spring training after fracturing bone in his left ring finger while playing for Magallanes in Venezuelan Winter League...Played only half of Orioles' spring training games but led club with 5 home runs, hitting all in a 6-game stretch.

Spent the first four months of the season with the New York Mets before being acquired on July 28 along with three minor leaguers in exchange for shortstop Mike Bordick...Was placed on the disabled list on May 13 after lacerating tip of his right index finger...Was activated on May 29 and became the Mets' regular shortstop when Rey Ordonez was sidelined for the year with a broken left forearm...Batted .277 in his last 27 games with an at bat for the Mets and had 11 multi-hit games while in the National League...Had a career-high 8-game hitting streak, June 21-28, batting .405 (15-37) and homering in back-to-back games June 25-26...Hit safely in 15 of his first 19 games after being traded to the Orioles, batting .413 (31-75)...Collected hits in 8 straight at-bats, August 1-4, and reached base in 14 of 15 plate appearances, July 31-August 4...Missed 7 games with a strained left hamstring suffered September 1...After returning to action, batted .229 (16-70) in his final 19 games of the season...Had a career-high 4 hits twice - August 8 at Detroit and June 25 vs. Pittsburgh...Hit his first major league home run in the bottom of the 10th inning on April 20 off Milwaukee's Curtis Leskanic to give the Mets a 5-4 win...Hit two home runs for Orioles, both off Tampa Bay's Ryan Rupe - August 6 at Tropicana Field and August 27 at Camden Yards...With the Mets, played 42 games at shortstop, 16 games in center field, 12 games in left field, 4 games each at second base and 3 games in right field...Played exclusively shortstop in 53 games with the Orioles.
