In 1993 graduated from Casa Robles (CA) High School, where as a senior he led his baseball team to the Northern California championship...played baseball at American River (CA) Junior College and the University of Tennessee...is donating 1 percent of his salary to the Reds Community Fund.
2009
Missed most of the season with a bulging disc in his neck...made his last appearance on 6/12 at KC (2ip, 0r)...5 days later went on the 15-day disabled list...on 7/20 had season-ending cervical disc replacement (Dr. Daniel Riew)...on 8/25 was transfered to the 60-day DL...began a throwing program on 9/19, when he threw a 30-pitch bullpen...pitched in the instructional league.
2008
Made a bid for the National League Comeback Player of the Year Award...did not play professionally for 3 seasons from 2005-07 while recovering from 7/13/04 "Tommy John" surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow...in his first season with the Reds posted a 4.48era in a career-high 64 apps...made 12 apps of at least 2.0 innings and 21 apps of more than 1.0 inning...retired the first batter in 49-64 apps (.766), the best percentage on the bullpen staff...in 22 apps from 6/22-8/15 posted a 1.40era, dropping overall ERA from 5.18 to 3.53...began that hot streak by putting together a career-high 19.0-inning scoreless streak over 15 apps (6/22-7/30), the longest scoreless streak by a Reds pitcher in 2008 and the longest active streak in the National League when it was snapped on 8/2 at Wsh (0.1ip, 4r)...on 4/3 vs Ari retired both batters faced in his first professional appearance since 5/3/04 (for StL vs Cubs)...in the 6-5 win on 7/11 at Mil recorded his first victory since 4/29/04 (for StL vs Phi)...twice more was in line for victories but was the victim of blown saves...in the 7-1 loss on 6/26 at Tor retired all 8 batters in his longest outing of the season...was 1 of 5 nonroster players to make the Opening Day roster (Paul Bako, Johnny Cueto, Kent Mercker, Corey Patterson)... in spring training wore uniform #84, the highest number in camp until #85 Jose Capellan was claimed off waivers from the Giants...became a free-agent following the season but on 12/4 was re-signed to a 2-year contract through 2010.

Started the season strong, but it came to an end in May after pitching in just 13 games for 17.1 total innings.
Was placed on the 15-day disabled list on 5/7 (retroactive to 5/4) and missed the remainder of the season. Underwent "Tommy John" surgery on his right elbow on July 13, performed at Barnes West Hospital in St. Louis by team physician, Dr. George Paletta.
Was one of the Cardinals most called upon relievers for the first month of the season, making 12 appearances in April.
Was 3-2 with a 5.19 ERA in his 13 appearances. Struck out 14 while opponents batted just .164.
