Seth Michael Etherton...attended Dana Hills High School in Dana Point, CA...studied marketing at the University of Southern California from 1995-98...named Outstanding Pitcher for the Trojans three years in a row (1996-98)...played with Major Leaguers Morgan Ensberg, Randy Flores, Jason Lane, Chad Moeller, Eric Munson, Geoff Jenkins, Jacque Jones, Gabe Alvarez and Brian Cooper at USC...he and his wife, Summer, became parents for the first time with the birth of son Duke Michael on May 19.

2005

Made three starts with the A's when Rich Harden was injured in May but spent the balance of the season at Triple-A Sacramento where he was 7-7 with a 2.72 ERA in 20 games, 19 starts...was recalled by Oakland on May 15 and was 1-1 with a 6.62 ERA in his three outings...picked up the win in his first start on May 18 against Boston, a 13-6 A's win...it was his first Major League appearance since September 17, 2003 at Pittsburgh and fi rst win since September 1, 2003 at Milwaukee...tossed 7.1 innings, matching his career high from July 20, 2000 against Texas...he and his wife, Summer, became parents for the first time the next day on May 19 when their son Duke Michael was born...returned to the A's on May 24 and had a no-decision in a 5-4 loss at Tampa Bay...then took the loss on May 29 in a 6-2 decision at Cleveland when he walked a career high four batters in 5.1 innings...allowed a .235 opponents batting average with the A's but opponents had a .500 slugging percentage, as nine of his 16 hits allowed were for extra bases (four doubles, one triple, four home runs)...Optioned back to Sacramento on June 5 and finished the season with the River Cats...led Sacramento in strikeouts (99) and finished second in starts (19), innings (112.1) and losses (7)...his 2.72 ERA was his lowest as a professional...had a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.3 to 1.0 with 99 strikeouts and 30 walks in 112.1 innings...held opponents to a .220 batting average which included a .207 (40 for 193) mark against left-handed hitters and .230 (53-for-230) against right-handers...allowed a .196 (19-for-97) average with runners in scoring position, including .093 (4-for-43) with RISP and two outs...tossed six or more innings in 11 of his 19 starts with Sacramento, allowed two runs or fewer 10 times and walked two batters or fewer 14 times...did not allow a run in consecutive starts on June 14 against Las Vegas (7.0 IP) and June 19 against Colorado Springs (7.0 IP), matching his season high for innings pitched in both outings...part of a four-game winning streak from May 11 to June 24, when he compiled a 1.45 ERA over a five-start stretch...struck out a season-high eight on June 30 against Salt Lake.

1998

In his first professional season he went 1-5 with a 6.14 ERA and one complete game in seven starts and two relief appearances at Double-A Midland in the Texas League.

1999

Combined to go 10-12 with a 3.52 ERA, four complete games and one shutout in 28 starts at Double-A Erie and Triple-A Edmonton...among Eastern League leaders, he ranked second in strikeouts (153), tied for third in complete games (4), fourth in innings pitched (167.2) and sixth in ERA (3.27).

2000

Went 3-2 with a 4.01 ERA in nine starts at Triple-A Edmonton and in his Major League debut he went 5-1 with a 5.52 ERA in 11 starts during two stints at Anaheim (May 26-June 23 and July 8- end of season)...beginning on August 5 he finished the season on the disabled list with tendinitis in his right shoulder...on September 7 he was transferred to the 60-day DL...on May 26 at Kansas City he made his big league debut and received a no decision in a 9-4 Angels loss (5.0 ip, 7 h, 3 r, 3 er, 1 bb, 2 so, 3 hr)...on May 31 he suffered a 7-3 loss at Cleveland in his second start and on June 13 he earned his first Major League victory in his fourth start, a 5-3 win at Tampa Bay...won his last five decisions over eight starts...his five-game winning streak was the longest by an Angels pitcher all season...in a 6-1 victory vs. Texas on July 20 he threw 7.1 innings in his longest outing of the season for Anaheim...in his last appearance of the season, on August 4 at Cleveland, he threw 2.2 innings in his shortest start of the season...on June 23 vs. Minnesota he had a season-high six strikeouts...allowed four home runs on July 25 at Texas, the most by an Angels pitcher all season...the Angels went 6-5 in his 11 starts...while with Edmonton, on May 15 at Sacramento he had a season-high 12 strikeouts and in a 4-2 victory on July 3 vs. Fresno he threw a season-high 8.2 innings.

2001

Spent the season on the 60-day disabled list following arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder...appeared in two exhibition games (1.2 ip, 5 h, 4 er) but spent most of spring training in a strength and conditioning program for his right shoulder...had the surgery on March 20 (Dr. Timothy Kremchek)...the next day went on the 60-day disabled list...was one of seven players who made eight appearances on the club's 60-day disabled list.

2002

Spent the season on the Reds' 60-day disabled list recovering from March 2001 shoulder surgery, but made 10 minor league rehab starts...in four minor league stops he combined to go 0-2 with a 4.88 ERA...on May 17 he was sent to Single-A Dayton on a rehab assignment and made one start there on May 18 vs. West Michigan (1.0 ip, 1 h, 2 so)...on May 20 he was sent to Chattanooga and from May 23-June 2 he made three starts for the Lookouts (0-1, 0.96 ERA)...on June 13 he was assigned to Louisville, where from June 13-July 3 he continued his rehab assignment by making five appearances (0-1, 8.22 ERA)...on July 11 he was claimed off waivers by the New York Yankees and the next day made his only start for their Double-A affiliate in Norwich (2.0 ip, 1 h, 1 r, 1 bb, 2 so)...on July 23, Major League Baseball voided the Yankees' waiver claim because Etherton was "unable to perform"...he returned to the Reds' 60-day disabled list, retroactive to July 11, and didn't pitch again the rest of the season.

2003

Made his first Major League appearances since 2000...spent most of the season at Triple-A Louisville, where he made 21 starts before he was promoted to the Reds on August 16...made seven starts for the Reds but missed his last two scheduled appearances because of stiffness and soreness on the outside of his right forearm...earlier in the season spent time on Louisville's disabled list with a strained right biceps muscle (April 24-May 1)...in his seven starts the Reds went 2-5...in a 5-2 loss vs. Houston on August 16 he made his first Major League appearance since August 4, 2000 for Anaheim at Cleveland...his 4-3 victory on August 22 at Houston, in his second start, was his first as a Red and his first in the majors since July 20, 2000 while pitching for the Angels...in that win at Houston he recorded his only Major League hit, a single off Wade Miller...on September 17 at Pittsburgh he suffered an 8-5 loss in the shortest start of his career (1.0 ip)...did not return for the second inning because of stiffness and soreness on the outside of his right forearm...did not pitch again the rest of the season...when he was promoted on August 16 he ranked second on Louisville's staff in innings pitched (123.1) and strikeouts (69)...made 11 quality starts for the Bats...from June 2-8 was named International League Pitcher of the Week (2-0, 1.32 ERA)...on September 25 he had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee (Dr. Timothy Kremchek).

2004

Pitched for Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Louisville in the Cincinnati farm system and combined for a 9-7 record and a 3.07 ERA in 26 games, all starts...also recorded 156 strikeouts and walked just 41 batters in 152.2 innings...finished second in the Reds farm system in strikeouts and ranked fourth in ERA...his strikeouts were his most as a professional since the 1999 season and his nine wins were surpassed only by his 10 with Erie in 1999...allowed a .240 opponents batting average which broke down to .226 (50 for 221) against left-handed hitters and .249 (88 for 353) against right-handers...opponents average dropped to .184 (26 for 141) with runners in scoring position...allowed one run or fewer in 14 of his 26 starts, walked two batters or fewer 21 times and held the opposition to five hits or fewer 17 times...began the year at Chattanooga and was 4-1 with a 1.98 ERA in seven starts...allowed a .207 batting average and recorded 46 strikeouts while walking just nine in 41.0 innings...yielded just two home runs...won each of his first three starts, going 3-0 with a 1.06 ERA (2 er in 17.0 ip)...then went 1-1 with a 2.63 ERA (7 er in 24.0 ip) over his final four Single-A starts from April 27 to May 13...had four wild pitches on April 27 against Huntsville...struck out a season high 10 batters and tossed 6.0 shutout innings in a 4-0 victory at Tennessee on May 8 in the first game of a doubleheader...was promoted to Louisville on May 14 and was 5-6 with a 3.47 ERA in 19 starts with the Bats...had three complete games which tied for the International League lead...struck out 110 batters in 111.2 innings and finished second on the club in both categories...allowed a .252 opponents batting average...posted a 1.89 ERA (4 er in 19.0 ip) in the first inning of his starts and 3.79 (39 er in 92.2 ip) after that...tossed a five-inning complete game on May 27 against Durham in an 8-1 win (7 h, 1 r, 1 er, 6 so)...that began a three-start stretch where he went 2-0 with a 1.84 ERA (3 er in 14.2 ip) for his only winning streak with Louisville...lost consecutive starts on June 17 against Buffalo and June 22 at Toledo, allowing 11 runs in 10.2 innings (9.28 ERA)...then tossed a seven-inning complete game shutout, a four-hitter in a 6-0 win in the first game of a doubleheader at Richmond on June 29 (1 bb, 3 so)...went 0-2 in five starts in July, but posted a 2.76 ERA (10 er in 32.2 ip) while holding the opposition to a .235 (28 for 119) batting average...finished the year by going 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA (12 er in 36.0 ip) and .221 (29 for 131) opponents batting average in six starts in August.
