Went on the DL on June 6 for three weeks with a subluxation of the right shoulder...pitched for three teams during the year: Single-A St. Lucie, Double-A Binghamton and the rookie league Gulf Coast Mets...was a combined 8-6 with a 4.07 ERA and one save in 24 games, 22 starts.
1998
Was recalled by the Mets from Triple-A Norfolk on September 8 but did not pitch...his combined minor league totals from Norfolk and Double-A Binghamton were 12-8 with a 2.84 ERA, 167.2 innings pitched, 66 runs, 53 earned runs, 67 walks and 200 strikeouts...the 200 combined strikeouts led all Double and Triple A pitchers, as well as all Mets minor leaguers.

Acquired from Kansas City on June 24 for Mike Wood and Mark Teahen after he was traded to the Royals with Jon Buck from Houston for Carlos Beltran earlier in the day...ended up saving 22 games for the A's, which tied for seventh in the per nine innings...was 6-2 with a 4.09 ERA in 45 appearances with the A's after going 0-4 with a 3.12 ERA in 32 appearances with the Astros...combined for a 6-6 record and a 3.69 ERA in 77 appearances overall...those were the second most appearances of his career to his 83 in 2002 with Houston...allowed a .217 opponents batting average which broke down to .188 (29 for 154) against right-handers and .245 (39 for 159) against left-handers...has allowed a .213 opponents batting average in his career, including .203 (235 for 1157) against right-handers and .226 (219 for 970) against left-handers...opponents average dropped to .182 (16 for 88) with runners in scoring position, including .188 (9 for 48) with RISP and two outs...opponents now have a .203 (109 for 537) career average with RISP, including .149 (40 for 268) with RISP and two outs...allowed just 1 of his 15 (6.7%) inherited runners to score with the A's and 2 of 17 (11.8%) overall...first batters faced were 8 for 40 (.200) with the A's and batted .239 (16 for 67) with three home runs, eight walks and two hit by pitches overall... had a 4.81 ERA (13 er in 24.1 ip) and .265 (26 for 98) opponents batting average in 23 appearances when pitching on no days rest and a 3.25 ERA (22 er in 61.0 ip) and .195 (42 for 215) opponents batting average in his other 54 outings...was 5-0 with a 1.82 ERA (6 er in 29.2 ip) and converted 13 of his 15 (86.7%) save opportunities in 26 appearances in the Coliseum and was 1-2 with a 7.29 ERA (17 er in 21.0) while converting 9 of his 13 (69.2%) save chances in 19 appearances on the road as an Athletic...was 2-1 with a 5.54 ERA (16 er in 26.0 ip), nine saves and four blown saves over his first 21 appearances with the A's and then went 4-1 with a 2.55 ERA (7 er in 24.2 ip), 13 saves and two blown saves over his final 24 outings with Oakland...made his A's debut on June 26 against San Francisco...entered the game with a 6-3 lead, the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth inning and retired the final two batters...then allowed four runs in the ninth inning, including a three-run home run to Pierzynski, for the blown save...five of his six blown saves with the A's came after entering the game with a lead of two or more runs...picked up the win in the game against the Giants when the A's scored once in the 10th inning for an 8-7 win...that snapped a career high six-game losing streak dating back to June 29, 2003...allowed five straight first batter hits from June 30 to July 8...did not allow a run or a hit in his first seven games after the All-Star Break (7.2 ip, 3 bb, 16 so) and converted each of first six save opportunities after the break before recording the blown save in consecutive outings on August 4 at New York and August 6 at Minnesota...tossed a season high 3.0 innings on the 6th but also picked up the win as the A's came back to win 3-1 in 11 innings...had seven outings of two or more innings in 2004...converted seven consecutive saves from August 10 to 28 and retired 26 of the 30 batters he faced over that span (8.2 ip, 4 h, 10 so)...then had six saves, two blown saves and a 3.94 ERA (7 er in 16.0 ip) over his final 15 outings...stranded each of his first 13 inherited runners with the A's before allowing 1 of 2 to score on October 2 against Anaheim...the run that scored was the deciding run in the A's 5-4 loss in the Angels division clinching win...his best streak of consecutive saves with Houston was six from April 13 to May 9...made his 300th career appearance on May 3 against Cincinnati...had five strikeouts in 2.0 innings on May 16 against New York (NL) which tied his career best as a reliever (eighth time). American League, despite spending the first 11-1/2 weeks of the season in the National League...also had six blown saves, which were tied for ninth most in the AL, and his save percentage of 78.6 (22 for 28) was second lowest in the AL...his 22 saves were the fewest by an A's team leader since Bill Taylor had 17 in 1996...was 14 for 17 (82.4%) in save opportunities with the Astros and was 36 for 45 (80.0%) overall which was sixth lowest in the majors...his 36 saves overall were a career high as he had just 28 career saves entering the season, including a high of 16 in 2000...finished 12th among Major League relievers in saves...combined with the A's and Astros to strike out 122 batters in 85.1 innings, an average of 12.87 per nine innings...tied for third among Major League relievers in strikeouts and now has 465 strikeouts as a reliever since 2001 which is the most in the majors over that span (Gagne, LA 375)...has 709 strikeouts in 585.0 career innings, an average of 10.91
2003
Finished the season 6-4 with a 2.48 ERA and four saves in 76 appearances...the 76 games marked the ninth-highest total in club single-season history...opponents hit .172 against him...ranked fourth in the National League and tied for sixth in the Majors among relievers with 87.0 innings pitched...finished tied for fourth among Major League relievers, along with teammate Brad Lidge, with 97 strikeouts...did not allow a run in 11 September appearances (13.2 innings)...posted a 5-1 record with a 1.05 ERA (3 er in 25.2 ip), including one save, 14 hits, 10 walks and 35 strikeouts in 23 appearances from May 3-June 18...was one of six pitchers who combined to no-hit the Yankees on June 11 at New York...tied the Major League record (45th time) and became the second pitcher in Astros history to strike out four hitters in an inning (Mike Scott, Sept. 3, 1986 at Cubs)...whiffed four Yankees in eighth inning...pitched 12.2 consecutive scoreless innings over 12 games from May 1-23...before the streak ended on May 27 at St. Louis, had not allowed a run since May 1 vs. Atlanta...notched his first save on April 27 at Montreal...began the year with three scoreless innings before allowing a leadoff homer (LaRue) in the 10th inning on April 8 in a 2-1 loss to the Reds...it was his first allowed since June 20, 2002 vs. Milwaukee, a span of 56.0 innings and 48 appearances.

Continued to entrench his status as one of the game's top relievers, going 6-4 with a 1.85 ERA and six saves...set the franchise single-season record with a career-high 83 appearances...made his 83rd appearance on September 29 at San Francisco...led Major League relievers with 118 strikeouts and ranked second with 97.1 innings...ranked second among Major League relievers (30+ innings) in batting average against (.173) and seventh in ERA (1.85)...allowed five runs over his last 50.0 innings (0.90 ERA from June 27)...did not allow more than two earned runs in an appearance (four times)...posted a 1-1 record with a 2.03 ERA (3 er in 13.1 ip) over 13 games in September...allowed one run in August (0.50 ERA, 1 er in 18.0 ip)...collected 21 strikeouts and two walks...finished July with a 1-0 record and a 0.57 ERA (1 er in 15.2 ip)...was 1-1 with a 1.45 ERA (3 er in 18.2 ip) in June...tossed 16.2 consecutive scoreless innings over 13 outings from August 9 to September 5...pitched 13.2 scoreless innings over 11 games from June 27 to July 18...suffered consecutive blown saves on May 22-23 at St. Louis.

Began the season in the starting rotation, but emerged as one of the Majors' top relievers...was first among all Major League relievers in strikeouts (128), fourth in batting average against (.182) and fifth in ERA (1.93)...went 6-3 with two saves in 57 relief appearances...was 1-2 with a 5.57 ERA (13 er in 21.0 ip) in four games as a starter...made his last start on May 1 at New York (no decision)...moved to the bullpen on May 4...home run allowed to St. Louis' Mark McGwire on September 26 was his first allowed since June 3 to Los Angeles' Tim Bogar...posted a 31.1 inning streak (22 games) without allowing an earned run from July 8 at Kansas City to September 3 at Cincinnati...allowed an eighth inning earned run at the Reds to take the loss in a 3-2 defeat...yielded an unearned run on August 14 vs. the Cubs, snapping a 20.2 consecutive scoreless innings streak spanning 14 outings (July 8 to August 12)...his 3.1 innings against San Diego on May 23 were a career high as a reliever.
2000
Became the first pitcher in National League history and only the second in Major League annals to have as many as 15 starts and 15 saves in a single year...only the eighth pitcher in big league history to record at least 15 starts and notch as many as 10 saves in a single campaign...had made 16 starts and one relief appearance upon moving into a relief role in mid-season...joined the bullpen corps on July 4, becoming the full-time closer after Billy Wagner underwent elbow surgery...was 1-5 with a 5.84 ERA as a starter...posted a 2-2 record and a 4.24 ERA over 34 relief stints...holds the distinction of being Houston's first pitcher to start the first regular-season game at Minute Maid Park, a 4-1 loss to Philadelphia on April 7 (6.0 ip, 5 h, 2 r, 1 bb, 5 so)...had 10 strikeouts on April 18 at Los Angeles...gained his first win as an Astro on May 1 at Milwaukee, allowing no runs and just one hit in an abbreviated five-inning stint...left the game with a sore left hip...fanned a career-high 13 batters on June 26 at Arizona, but lost 6-1...pitched one inning of relief on July 6 vs. Arizona in his first outing as the Astros' closer...notched his first save of the season on July 9 vs. Kansas City in a 9-6 win...did not allow a run over his first 11 relief outings and 12 innings from July 6-August 4...became the first pitcher in franchise history to save four consecutive games (August 15-16 vs. Pittsburgh, August 18-19 vs. Milwaukee).
