Was the Orioles' Opening Night starter on April 4 vs. Boston and earned the victory, 7-2...was only the second time in seven seasons he has won his first decision of the season...allowed a season-high nine runs on April 25 vs. Toronto, the most runs he had surrendered in a start since April 26, 2000 at Chicago (AL)...pitched his first complete game of the year on April 20 vs. Tampa Bay, throwing 88 pitches...only one other Oriole (Ben McDonald, 86 pitches, 7/21/90) threw fewer pitches in a 9-inning complete game since STATS, Inc. records started in 1988...shut out Anaheim on May 16 at Camden Yards, 4-0, for his third career shutout and first since June 28, 2001 at Toronto...following the shutout of Anaheim, lost a career-high nine straight starts and 12 of 13 decisions, to conclude the first half -- the Orioles did not score more than three runs while he was on the mound during the losing streak...it was the third longest losing streak in club history...was among the American League's top pitchers following the All-Star break...went 8-3 after the break, tied for fifth in the league in second half wins...tied for the American League lead with five complete games and two shutouts...tied for eighth in games started (33) and ninth in innings pitched (215.2), the fourth time in six years he had pitched at least 210 innings...pitched at least 6.0 innings in 26 of his 33 starts, including the last 16 starting July 4...led the league's pitchers in hits (265) and earned runs (127) allowed, was second in runs allowed (136), tied for third in losses (15), yielded the fourth highest batting-average-against (.305) and had the eighth highest ERA (5.30) among qualifying pitchers...he allowed seven or more runs in an outing seven times...had 12 first-half losses, the most in club history -- Mike Boddicker ('88), Dennis Martinez ('83), Ross Grimsley ('75) and Dave McNally ('73) lost 11 games before the All-Star game...went 0-6 with a 6.46 ERA in June, becoming the first Orioles pitcher to drop six games in a month since Robin Roberts in May 1965 (2-6)...the only other Orioles to lose six games in a month were Mike Fornieles (0-6) in May '57 and Joe Coleman (2-6) in July '54...won his first five decisions following the All-Star break, one shy of his career-best winning streak...in his 11 wins, he pitched to a 1.86 ERA (82.1 ip, 60 hits, 17er)...in his other 22 starts, he posted a 7.43 ERA (133.1 ip, 207 hits, 110 er).

Was the Orioles' top pitcher through the first four months of the season before being traded to the Giants in exchange for RHP Kurt Ainsworth, LHP Damian Moss and LHP Ryan Hannaman on July 31...combined to go 17-12 with a 3.75 ERA in 31 starts between the Orioles and San Francisco...wins total and ERA were both career bests, topping 12 wins in 1999 and a 4.06 ERA in 2002...tied for seventh in the majors in wins and 14th in the majors in ERA...worked at least 6.0 innings in 28 of 31 outings (90.3%)...had four complete games and worked at least 7.0 innings in 18 starts...allowed three earned runs or fewer in 18 of 31 starts...had a decision in 29 of his 31 starts...worked 216.0 innings, the third time in his career he topped the 200-inning mark...at the time of his trade, he ranked among American League leaders in wins (T2nd, 14), winning pct. (8th, .700), innings (9th, 148.0) and complete games (3rd, 4)...won 13 of his last 17 starts for the Orioles, going 13-4 with a 3.75 ERA (124.2 ip, 125 hits, 52 er) over that time...his 12 victories in the first half were the most by an Orioles pitcher before the All-Star break since Jimmy Key's 12 wins in 1997...won a career-high five straight starts, May 21-June 13...the five-game winning streak was the second longest of his career, the best coming when he won six straight decisions in July-August 1998, his rookie year...had never been more than four games over .500 in his major league career but reached a season/career-best nine games over at 14-5 with his win at NYY on July 24...allowed three runs or fewer in 6 of 10 starts for the Giants...earned his first win of the season on April 10 at Tampa Bay, snapping a personal five-game losing streak... at the time of the trade, was the senior member of the Orioles team in terms of continuous service, despite being just 26 years old...won three straight starts, August 22-September 1, with a 1.25 ERA (21.2 ip, 3 er) for San Francisco...however, he went winless in his last four regular season starts, going 0-3 with a 5.63 ERA (24.0 ip, 15 er)...left with a 5-4 lead in Game 2 of the National League Division Series vs. Florida, but did not get a decision in the Giants' eventual 9-5 loss.
