William Hayward Wilson
William Hayward (Mookie) Wilson begins his second tour of duty as the New York Mets first base and outfield coach...Served in that position for the first time from 1997-2002. Was the Mets minor league outfield and baserunning coordinator in 2010 after spending the previous four years in private business. In 2005, he managed the Brooklyn Cyclones, the Mets Class-A affiliate in the New York-Penn League. Managed Kingsport (R) of the Appalachian League in 2003 and 2004. Inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame in 1996 and was voted a member of the Mets' 40th Anniversary Team in 2002. Returned to the Mets organization on December 23, 1993 as a member of the Community Outreach Department and a roving minor league instructor...Served in that role until being named the club's first base coach on October 17, 1996. In the spring of 1996, he was a baserunning and outfield instructor in the Mets' minor league camp. Was a Mets outfielder from 1980-1989 and ranks among the club's all-time leaders in stolen bases, triples, total bases, extra-base hits, games, at-bats, runs and hits. Best remembered for perhaps the most memorable at-bat in franchise history, dodging a two-out, two-strike, wild pitch from Boston pitcher Bob Stanley in the 10th inning of Game Six of the 1986 World Series that enabled Kevin Mitchell to score the tying run...Then hit a ground ball that trickled under first baseman Bill Buckner's glove, allowing Ray Knight to score the winning run and force a Game Seven that the Mets would win. Graduated from Spartanburg (SC) Junior College with a B. A. Degree in Liberal Arts and attended the University of South Carolina for two years, majoring in Business Administration...Graduated from Mercy College (NY) on May 26, 1996. A brother, John, played in the Detroit Tigers farm system, while another brother, Phil, was in the Minnesota Twins' farm system...His son, Preston, played in the majors from 1998-2007, including eight games with the Mets in 1998. Was the club's second selection in the June, 1977 Free Agent Draft.
