Used primarily out of the bullpen for the first time in his career, Wakefield made 49 appearances, 32 in relief...finished the year 6-11 with a career-high 15 saves and a 5.08 ERA...was 1-2 with 15 saves and a 3.50 ERA (18 ER/46.1 IP) in 32 relief appearances...opened the year in the rotation, going 1-2 with an 8.01 ERA (19 ER/21.1 IP) in 5 starts, but was moved to the pen when Tom Gordon went on the D.L. on April 17...earned his first major league save with a scoreless 9th inning in a 3-2 win May 6 vs. Texas...returned to the rotation when Gordon was activated from the D.L...fanned a season-high 9 in a 5-1 loss June 8 at Montreal...again assumed the role of closer when Gordon returned to the D.L. Released by the Pirates during Spring Training, Wakefield signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox on April 27 and went on to finish 3rd in A.L. Spent the entire season at Triple-A Buffalo, where he went 5-15 with a 5.84 ERA in 30 games, including a league-high 29 starts...ranked 4th in the American Association with 175.2 innings pitched...led the league in losses, walks (98) and homers allowed (27)...the Bisons were shut out in 5 of his starts and scored 2 runs or less in 11 of his 15 setbacks...his win May 7 at Louisville was his only victory in his first 13 starts...hit 5 batters August 9 at Nashville...snapped a 10-game winless streak with a 3-hit shutout August 14 at New Orleans...fanned a minor league career-high 9 August 30 at Louisville...was named AA Pitcher of the Month in August...went 3-for-3 with a double as a pinch hitter...was recalled by the Pirates September 7 but did not pitch in the majors due to the players' strike.

1993

Following a stellar rookie campaign, started the Pirates' season opener, earning a 9-4 win April 6 vs. San Diego...worked a career-high 10.0 innings-plus in a 6-2 win April 27 at Atlanta, becoming the first Pirate to hurl 10.0-plus innings since Rick Reuschel May 25, 1986...threw 172 pitches in the game, most by any major leaguer since Fernando Valenzuela made 173 pitches August 30, 1987...went 0-5 with a 7.59 ERA (34 ER/40.1 IP) in his next 8 starts...after making his first 26 big league appearances as a starter, made his bullpen debut June 14 at St. Louis...then went 0-1 with a 10.24 ERA (11 ER/9.2 IP) in 2 starts before being optioned to Double-A Carolina July 9...after going 3-5 with a 6.99 ERA in 9 Southern League starts, was recalled September 1 and lost 3 in a row before shutting out the Cubs 1-0 on a 5-hitter in game 2 of a September 26 doubleheader...then threw a 4-hit shutout in a 5-0 win September 30 vs. Philadelphia in what would be his final Pirates appearance, becoming the first Pirate to toss back-to-back shutouts since Randy Tomlin in 1991...hit his only major league homer July 7 at Houston off Mark Portugal.

Opened the season at Triple-A Buffalo and by the end of the season was a post-season hero and The Sporting News National League Rookie Pitcher of the Year...between Buffalo and Pittsburgh, finished 20-4 with a 2.71 ERA and 12 complete games in 35 regular season and post-season starts...with the Bisons, won his first 4 decisions and went 10-3 with an American Association-leading 6 complete games and a 3.06 ERA (6th in the league) in 20 starts before being called up by the Pirates on July 31...went the distance to win his major league debut that night, earning a 3-2 win vs. St. Louis...allowed 2 unearned runs on 6 hits in 9.0 innings, walking 5 and fanning 10...worked at least 8.0 innings in each of his first 4 starts with the Pirates, opening 3-0 with a 1.32 ERA (5 ER/34.0 IP) before suffering his lone big league loss of 1992 August 21 at San Francisco...after allowing 6 earned runs in 6.0 innings, rebounded to go 5-0 with a 1.90 ERA (11 ER/52.0 IP) in his final 8 regular season starts...threw his first career shutout August 26 at Los Angeles, walking 2 and fanning 3 in the 6-hit 2-0 win...went on to win both of his NLCS starts vs. Atlanta with a pair of complete-game efforts...posted a 3.00 ERA (6 ER/18.0 IP) in twice out-pitching Tom Glavine...earned a complete-game 3-2 win at Three Rivers Stadium in Game 3...allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, walking one and striking out 3...won Game 6 in Atlanta 13-4, allowing 4 runs on 9 hits, with 4 walks and 4 K's.

1991

Led Pirates minor leaguers in wins (15), innings (187.2) and complete games (8), going 15-8 with a 2.90 ERA in 26 games (25 starts) for Double-A Carolina and 0-1 with an 11.57 ERA in one start for Triple-A Buffalo...led the Southern League with 8 complete games, ranked 2nd in innings pitched (183.0 IP) and 9th in ERA...threw 3 straight complete game for the Mudcats April 24-May 6..was 10-7 with a 3.26 ERA at Carolina when he was promoted to Buffalo on July 29...allowed 3 homers in a 9-4 loss to Oklahoma City...returned to Carolina and went 5-1 with a 1.78 ERA in 6 starts to close out the season.

1990

In his first full season as a pitcher, went 10-14 with a 4.73 ERA in a Carolina League-leading 28 starts for Single-A Salem...threw 2 complete games and worked a league-high 190.1 innings.

1989

Opened the season with Single-A Augusta, where he played 6 games at third base and 2 at first base...hit .235 with 5 RBI in 11 games before being sent to short-season Single-A Welland, where he was converted into a pitcher...went 1-1 with 2 saves and a 3.40 ERA on 18 games (one start)...fanned 42 and allowed a .211 average and only one homer in 39.1 innings...also played 11 games at third base, 7 at second and one at first in the New York-Penn League.

1988

Made his professional debut with Watertown of the short-season Single-A New York-Penn League, where he played 54 games as a first baseman and hit .189 with 3 homers and 20 RBI.
