Opened the season with Toronto appearing in two games prior to being optioned to Syracuse (AAA) on April 16...In 58 games with Syracuse hit .346 (72-208, 13-2B, 1-3B, 5HR, 24RBI)...Against right hand pitchers hit .313 (56-179) and against left handers hit .552 (16- 29)...Hit .310 (13-42) in August before being recalled to Toronto on August 12 after Otis Nixon was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers...Syracuse was 30-24 with Stewart in the lineup and 15-47 without...Selected by Baseball America as the ninth best prospect in the International League...With Toronto hit .286 (48-168) with 22 RBI and seven triples which was tied for fifth in the AL, second among rookies...Also ranked fourth among rookies with 10 stolen bases in just 44 games...Ten game hit streak from August 19 to 29...Collected career high in hits on August 21 at Chicago, was 4-6, 2-2B, 3RBI...Hit .295 (18-61) in August with eight RBI and collected ten walks with just seven strikeouts...Led the Blue Jays in RBI in September with 14 and hit .283 (30-106) with ten doubles and five triples...On September 20 in New York became the eighth Blue Jay in club history to hit two triples in a game, was the tenth time it has been done...Hit .350 (14-40) with runners in scoring position...Hit .343 (12-35) against left handers and .271 (36-133) against right handers.

Was having an All Star season with Hagerstown of the South Atlantic League until suffering a season ending dislocated left shoulder in homeplate collision in June...Posted a 13 game hit streak April 15 to 28...Was 5-6 on April 26 in Macon...Selected to appear in the All Star game but was unable...Selected by Baseball America as the Best Defensive Outfielder in the South Atlantic League.

With St. Catharines led the New York Penn League in at bats (301), tied for the lead in runs (53), tied second in games (75), tied fourth in hits (84) and was fifth in stolen bases (25)...Scored 24 runs in his first 26 games...Collected seven consecutive hits at Welland, September 2-4, including a 5-5 outing on the second.
