Kotsay batted .275 in 2006 and matched career-low marks in runs (57) and extra-base hits (39) since coming up with the Marlins in 1997. He started 96 of the A's first 111 games through Aug. 6, but back problems limited him to just 25 starts over the A's final 51 games. Kotsay hit .246 before the All-Star break, and hit .326 after it. He led the A's outfielders with six assists, and now has 105 assists dating back to 1998, which are the most among Major League outfielders over that span. His seven homers tied a career low since his first full season in 1998. He had just one homer in his final 75 games. Made his postseason debut in 2006 after playing in 1,284 regular-season games without a playoff appearance, which ranked seventh among active players.
