After a walk and a double, Kile was hit in the face by a Robert Machado line drive. He remained in the game until the sixth, but then had to come out. He surpassed the 2,000-inning plateau for his career in the game...Blanked ATL for 8.0 IP as he out-dueled Greg Maddux in a 4-0 win vs. the Braves on 8/1 at Busch. Walked just one and fanned eight...Recorded his second CG of the season (28th career) in a 3-1 win at MON on 8/7. Held the Expos hitless for the first 5.1 innings and allowed a total of just four hits. Javier Vazquez, his opposing moundsman, also had a CG in the 2-hour, 16-minute contest...Won his 15th game at HOU on 9/26, when he pitched 7.0 scoreless innings and allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out 10 in the 5-1 Cards win.
2001 POSTSEASON - Pitched one game in the Division Series vs. Arizona...started Game 3 at St. Louis and did not earn a decision in the 5-3 loss...went 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on three hits, with five walks and five strikeouts...he had arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in November.

Made a strong bid for Cy Young honors in his first season with the Cardinals, establishing himself as one of the Majors' top starting pitchers in 2000. He and Braves Tom Glavine (21 wins) finished as the NL's lone 20-game winners... capped off brilliant season with his career-high 20th win in final start of the season, 9/28 at SD... became the first Cardinals pitcher in 15 years to win 20 games (Joaquin Andujar and John Tudor each won 21 games for the Cardinals in 1985)... won each of his final six decisions and seven of his last eight... owned a 2.82 ERA (51.0 IP/16 ER) and allowed just 12 walks and four home runs during his season ending six-game winning streak... his strikeout-to-walk ratio for the year was better than 3:1 (192-58) and he worked seven or more innings 21 times while averaging 6.2 IP per start... ranked among NL leaders in wins (20), strikeouts (192), day ERA (2.57), complete games (5), innings pitched (232.1), home runs allowed (33) and hit batsmen (13)... 53 of his 101 earned runs allowed came in his nine losses (9.35 ERA; 51.0 IP). His ERA in his other 25 games was 2.38 (48 ER/181.1 IP)... his season-ending ERA stood at 3.91, but if you take out his performance from 4/13 at COL (1.2 IP/8 ER) it drops down to 3.63... his walk total (58) was the lowest of his career, and he surpassed the 200 innings pitched marker for the fourth time in five years... fashioned a season-best string of 24.2-straight walkless innings from 8/22-9/7... had his shortest outing (6.0 IP) in over a month on 9/12 at PIT after waiting out a 1:44 rain delay, but earned his 18th win of the year... allowed five hits and one unearned run in the Cards 11-1 win... fanned 10 batters in 7.0 innings of work on 9/7, as he posted his 17th win with a 6-1 decision over Montreal in which he allowed just five hits and walked one... posted his team-leading fifth CG of the season on 9/2 vs NY, with a 2-1 win... allowed just five hits and no walks in his 26th-career CG... threw his fourth complete game of the year in a 7-2 win at ATL on 8/27. Allowed two runs on eight hits, with no walks and five strikeouts. Gave up three straight hits (and two runs) in the third inning before retiring 21 of the last 25 batters... allowed three hits through four shutout innings vs. PIT on 8/22, but ended with six runs allowed on a season-high 11 hits in 6.2 innings of work for his ninth loss, 6-2. Allowed a two-run HR to B. Giles in the 5th and two more homers in a four-run 7th... collected his third complete game 8/16 at CHI, allowing one run on six hits. His 6th-inning strikeout of Sammy Sosa was No. 1400 for Darryl's career. Allowed the Cubs lone run in the 7th inning, but then retired the final eight batters... was a 6-2 loser 8/11 at MIL, giving him back-to-back losses for just the second time this season... had a two-game winning streak ended on 8/6 in a 6-4 loss to the Braves... tossed his eighth career shutout and 23rd career complete game with a 4-0 blanking of the Expos on 7/31 at Olympic Stadium. Threw just 106 pitches and allowed six hits, as only one Expo batter reached third base on the night... facing the Diamondbacks for the 2nd time in six days, earned his 12th win with an 8-4 victory on 7/26 at STL, allowing just one earned run in 8 plus innings pitched... matched up against Randy Johnson in an outstanding pitching dual at Bank One Ballpark on 7/20, but did not earn a decision in the 3-2 loss. Darryl faced the minimum number of batters and allowed just one hit through five innings before giving up a one-out solo HR to Hanley Frias in the sixth to knot the score at 1. Went eight innings and allowed just the one run on three hits, with nine strikeouts and no walks, as Tony Womack hit a two-run homer in the ninth off Dave Veres for the 3-2 decision. Darryl collected a base hit and walk off Johnson... suffered his sixth loss and went just 4.2 innings at Comiskey Park on 7/15, as the Pale Hose posted a 15-7 win. Darryl allowed six runs on eight hits in a game that the Sox led 6-4 before a nine-run seventh inning... was selected for the third time in his career to the NL All-Star team and posted a two-inning, two-hit, scoreless stint. Was the only NL hurler to go two innings... had no-decision on 7/7 vs. SF, allowing 2 runs in 7.0 IP in a 4-2 loss to the Giants... lost his fifth game of the year 7/2 vs. HOU. Struck out 10 batters for the fourth time this season, but allowed five runs on seven hits (3 HR) in seven innnings in a 6-3 loss... won a 4-3 decision at CIN on 6/27. Allowed three runs on eight hits, with no walks and five Ks in 7.1 IP. Allowed a pair of HR to K. Griffey for Cincy's only runs... his start vs. LA on 6/24 was cut short due to rain. Pitched two scoreless innings in a game that had three delays totaling nearly five hours (a 6-1 Cards win)... suffered his fourth loss on 6/18 at LA, 6-3. Allowed six runs in six innings, including home runs to Eric Karros and Adrian Beltre... won his 3rd straight start 6/13 at SD with an 8-3 win over the Padres. He allowed nine hits and three walks, but the Padres stranded 10 runners... tossed the 22nd complete game of his career in a 4-2 win over the Royals on 6/7 at Busch Stadium. Fanned 10 in the complete-game perfomance. Allowed just one run on four hits through the first 8.0 innings... posted his 8th win of the year and 100th of his career with an eight-inning, three-hit performance against CLE on 6/2. Went 6.0 innings and allowed four runs and a season-high 10 hits in a Cards 5-4 loss... had his four-game winning streak snapped on 5/12 vs. LA, losing 13-0. Surrendered five runs in the first inning and another in the second, as the Cards were shut out for the first time this season... fired 6.2 innings of shutout ball in his 5/6 start at CIN. Collected his fourth-straight win and allowed five hits and two walks while striking out five... earned his fifth win 4/30 at PHI vs. Curt Schilling. Finished the season with 190.2 innings pitched, failing to reach 200 innings for the first time since 1995... issued a career-high and Club-record 109 walks, with 35 of those runners (32 percent) coming around to score... went 5-3 with a 7.33 ERA at home, 3-10 with a 5.89 ERA on the road... was 1-0 with a 1.20 ERA in two starts against HOU... made second straight Opening Day start, holding the Padres to two runs in 6.2 innings in Monterrey, Mexico on 4/4... dropped a 2-0 decision to Kevin Brown 4/10 at LA, surrendering two solo home runs in 7.0 innings... allowed two runs on eight hits, one walk and four strikeouts in a complete game win 4/29 at STL, tying Roger Bailey for first on Colorado's all-time complete game list with five... broke his own Club record when he compiled a string of 17.2 consecutive scoreless innings pitched from 5/20 to 6/5... extended his Veterans Stadium shutout streak to 13.2 innings with 7.2 scoreless frames 5/30 at PHI... reached the 1,500-inning milestone 6/5 vs. MIL... tossed 7.1 innings and allowed two earned runs in a no-decision 6/11 at TEX, the eighth time in 13 starts that he had allowed three or fewer runs... saw the Rockies relinquish the largest lead in Club history when the Cubs rallied from a 9-1 deficit for a 13-12 victory 6/22 at Coors Field; left with a three-run lead after allowing seven runs in 5.2 innings. Signed with Colorado in the offseason and worked a Club-record 230.1 innings and tied the team record with a personal-best 35 starts.
