Full name JOSE ANTONIO HERNANDEZ...He and his wife, Melanie, have two children, daughter, Jolanie, and Jose...Resides in Dorado, PR...Graduated from Maestro Ladi High School in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico in 1987...Played baseball, basketball and volleyball...Attended Interamerica University in Bayamon, Puerto Rico...His cousin, Figueroa, saw big league action with the Pirates and Mets...Set a Puerto Rico Winter League record with 20 home runs for Mayaguez during the 1997-98 winter ball campaign.

Acquired from Pittsburgh on Aug. 22 for cash, with the Phillies being his ninth Major League team. ... Hit .237 as a pinch-hitter. ... Hit his sixth career grand slam on Sept. 18 against Chicago.
2005
A much-traveled Hernandez did prove versatile in his ability to play several positions, but his bat was a disappointment. He hit .231 in 234 at-bats, a total that included 60 strikeouts. His .338 slugging percentage was among the lowest on the team.
2004
The 2002 All-Star is entering his 19th professional season...Spent the entire 2004 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers in utility role, hitting .289 (61-211) with 12 doubles, 1 triple, 13 home runs & 29 RBI in 95 games the NL West Division champions...Hernandez recorded 26 extra base hits and a .540 slugging % in just 211 bats and only Anaheim's Troy Glaus (207AB, 18HR) hit more home runs in the big leagues in 2004 among players with 215 or fewer at bats. Set career highs in games played, at-bats, doubles, home runs, runs batted in, sacrifice flies and strikeouts . . . equaled his career high with 135 hits and led Major League Baseball with 185 strikeouts one shy of Rob Deer's franchise record . . . appeared in 150 games at shortstop (147 starts), one game as a pinch hitter and one game in left field . . . became just the second Brewer in franchise history, joining Ted Kubiak (July 19, 1970 at Boston), to drive in seven runs in a game when he did so on April 12 vs Houston . . . went 2-5 with two home runs that day . . . connected on a 1-1 pitch from Nelson Cruz on April 12 for his fourth career grand slam and third as a Brewer . . . tied for third in franchise lore with three grand slams in a Brewers' uniform alongside Sixto Lezcano, Don Money, Darrell Porter, Devon White and Robin Yount . . . hit his 100th career home run on July 7 at San Francisco off Ryan Vogelsong in the fifth inning . . . tied for second in franchise history with Dale Sveum (1987) for home runs by a Brewers shortstop in a single season . . . equaled the Brewers franchise record after striking out five times in a 13 inning game on July 8 at San Francisco . . . ranked second among National League shortstops with 25 home runs trailing San Francisco's Rich Aurilia (37) and third with 78 runs batted in trailing Aurilia (97) and Montreal's Orlando Cabrera (96) . . . hit 17 homers against the NL Central teams . . . recorded a .972 fielding percentage committing 18 errors in 649 total chances . . . committed just seven errors after the All-Star Break.

Was the starting third baseman during the majority of the season despite battling back problems during the second half . . . posted his 500th career hit on April 4 at Cincinnati with a run-scoring single in the eight off Scott Sullivan . . . hit second career grand slam on May 20 vs San Francisco off Mark Gardner . . . homered in three straight games May 20-22 (#1) . . . blasted his third career grand slam, second of the season, on May 23 vs Atlanta off Kevin Millwood . . . became the first Brewer to hit multiple grand slams in the same season since 1995 when John Jaha (three) and Matt Mieske (two) accomplished the feat . . . began to find his stroke in August hitting .400 (10-25) prior to being placed on the 15-Day Disabled List August 14, retroactive to August 10, with a strained lower back . . . batted .533 (8-15) with two home runs, 23 runs batted in, a .933 slugging percentage and a .474 on-base percentage with the bases loaded . . . committed just three errors after the All-Star break.

Was a versatile everyday player for the Cubs, seeing action at seven different positions during the course of the campaign batting .254 with career highs in home runs (23) and runs batted in (75)...played in 72 games at third base (54 starts), 45 games at shortstop (37 starts), 31 games in leftfield, 31 games in centerfield (25 starts), three games at first base (two starts), two games at second base (one start) and two games in rightfield...of his 23 home runs, eight were hit as a third baseman, seven as a centerfielder, six as a shortstop, one as a second baseman and one as a pinch hitter...hit his second career pinch hit homer April 24 at Los Angeles off Ismael Valdes...homered in three straight games June 6-8 driving in nine runs...tied his career-high with five RBI in the June 7 contest against their cross town rival, the Chicago White Sox, with a three-run homer and a two-run double...had a career-high 10-game hitting streak from June 12-21 batting .372...recorded his second career two-homer game on June 17 vs Milwaukee driving in four runs...had his second career four-hit game on August 18 vs St. Louis going 4-4...was 5-11 with one home run and an RBI as a pinch hitter...was 2-7 in the Division Series against Atlanta in his first career post-season action.
1997
Became the first Cub to start at all four infield positions in a decade, seeing action in 121 overall contests...made 12 starts at third base, five starts at shortstop, 10 starts at second base, one start at first base and one start in leftfield...the last Cub to start at all four infield positions in one season was Manny Trillo in 1987...overall, he played in 47 games at third base, 21 at shortstop, 20 at second base, six in leftfield and one at first base...batted .268 with seven doubles, five triples, three home runs and 13 RBI in games he started...batted .286 as a pinch hitter with four runs batted in and his first pinch hit home run on July 13 off St. Louisb Todd Stottlemyre at Wrigley Field.

Spent almost half of the season as the Cubsb starting shortstop after beginning the campaign as the clubbs Opening Day third baseman...played in 87 games at shortstop (71 starts), 43 games at third base (11 starts), one game at second base and one game in centerfield...made his first Opening Day start on April 1 at third base against San Diego...entered the Cubsb June 3 contest vs Philadelphia as a defensive replacement at shortstop for the injured Rey Sanchez and hit a game-ending home run off Ken Ryan...went on to start the next 33 games at short...notched a career-high four hits and scored the winning run in the Cubsb 16-inning 9-6 victory at San Diego June 22.

Saw action in 93 games and batted .245 with 13 home runs and 40 runs batted in...of his 60 hits, 28 were for extra bases...averaged one home run every 18.9 at-bats and one RBI every 6.1 at-bats...had his first Major League multi-homer game on August 31 hitting two home runs at Florida, including a grand slam off Buddy Groom...appeared in 43 games at shortstop (19 starts), 29 games at second base (26 starts) and 20 games at third base (10 starts).

Was a versatile utility player in his first season with the Cubs appearing in 28 games at third base (nine starts), 21 games at shortstop (13 starts), eight games at second base (two starts) and one game in centerfield...hit his first Major League home run on May 12 off St. Louisb Tom Urbani at Busch Stadium.

Began the season with Canton-Akron, the Double A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, hitting .200 with nine stolen bases in 45 games...was assigned to Orlando, Double A affilate of the Chicago Cubs, after being traded on June 1...batted .304 in 71 games with eight home runs and 33 RBI...had a 22-game hitting streak July 30-August 23 batting .359...received a late season promotion to Triple A Iowa on August 30.

Claimed off waivers by Cleveland on April 3...played in 130 games for Canton-Akron, the Eastern League champions...hit .255 with 56 runs scored and 46 RBI...played in three games for Cleveland after being recalled September 25...went hitless in four at-bats.

Spent most of the Minor League campaign with Tulsa, the Double A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, recording a Texas League best .968 fielding percentage at shortstop...was promoted to Triple A Oklahoma City June 27...batted .304 in 14 games before returning to Tulsa July 13...saw his first Major League action, appearing in 45 games with Texas after being recalled from Tulsa on August 9...had four hits and a walk in his first five plate appearances, including a single off Milwaukeebs Chris Bosio in his first Major League at bat August 9...began Major League career red hot hitting .333 in his first 12 games...had a .975 fielding percentage in 44 games at shortstop...also played in one game at third base...fractured his left collarbone and shoulder blade in a collision with teammate Kevin Reimer on October 4.

Led Florida State League shortstops with a .959 fielding percentage at Class A Charlotte, Florida...was second among shortstops in assists (372).
