Went 7-5 with a 4.38 ERA (54ER/111IP) in his first full season in the Majors...made 23 appearances (21 starts) and struck out 93 while walking 61...was 7-5 with a 4.09 ERA (50ER/110IP) in his 21 starts..did not pitch after his appearance on Sept. 12...MRI revealed an impingment in his left shoulder and rotator cuff tendinitis...will undergo an aggressive rehab program...was 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA (7ER/23.1IP) in five starts after returning from disabled list (left shoulder soreness) on Aug. 18...won 6-1 at Dodger Stadium on Sept. 1, his first victory since Aug. 21...pitched six scoreless innings after allowing a run in the first...lost 2-1 to Los Angeles at home on Sept. 1...allowed two runs in the second inning...fanned a career-high nine...tied his career high with eight strikeouts in a combined 4-0 shutout (Stone, Dotel) vs. Chicago on Aug. 21...won for the first time since May 31 vs. the Cubs...came off the disabled list on Aug. 18 and pitched two innings, throwing only 34 pitches at Cincinnati due to a two-hour, 56- minute rain delay...did not figure in the 2-1, 10-inning loss...allowed a first-inning homer (Kearns)...the Aug. 18 outing was his first since losing on July 1 at Cincinnati...worked only 1.1 innings in that start at Cinergy Field...placed on the DL the next day with left shoulder soreness...returned to Houston and underwent an MRI on July 3...revealed no structural damage in his left shoulder and only minor inflammation...prescribed anti-inflammatory medication...made three rehab starts, allowing four earned runs in a combined 11.2 innings in one outing for Triple A New Orleans and two for Double A Round Rock (3.09 ERA)...scratched from his start on June 27 vs. Arizona due to left shoulder stiffness...was 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA (7ER/30.2IP) in five starts until suffering his first big league loss on May 10 at Pittsburgh...was 5- 2 with a 3.39 ERA (24ER/63.2IP) over his first 12 games (10 starts)...worked only two innings in an 8-0 loss to Seattle and Jamie Moyer on June 21...five earned runs tied his career high...allowed a grand slam (Sierra) in the second inning...had no-decision in the 7-6 win vs. Texas in his first Interleague start on June 16 at home...left a 4-4 tie after five innings...allowed a three-run, first-inning homer (Perry)...facing Randy Johnson in his first appearance vs. the Diamondbacks, had no-decision in a 13-inning, 5-4 defeat on June 5...leading 3-1, allowed back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning (Guillen, Finley)...left a 3-3 tie after six...won on May 31 at Chicago when he pitched seven shutout innings in his second consecutive start vs. the Cubs...allowed hits in the first and second inning, but did not allow another until a leadoff double in the sixth...notched six consecutive quality starts before getting no-decision vs. Chicago on May 26 in a dramatic 7-5, come-frombehind win in his first-ever appearance vs. the Cubs....allowed a first-inning home run (Stynes)...rebounded from his first Major League defeat to beat the Phillies and Vicente Padilla 6-2 on May 15 at home...scattered four hits and two runs with two walks and five strikeouts over seven innings...allowed a fourth-inning home run (Burrell)...suffered his first big league loss on May 10 at Pittsburgh...touched for a two-run home run in the second inning (Young), just his second allowed in 2002 and his first since a April 12 relief appearance at St. Louis...in his first start vs. New York, won 3-1 on May 4 at home, tying his then- career high with eight strikeouts...in his fifth consecutive outing (including third consecutive start) on the road, won 7-1 on April 28 in his first career appearance vs. the Braves...blanked Atlanta over a career-high tying seven innings with no walks...retired 11 of his final 12 batters...had no-decision in a 4-3, 12-inning loss at Florida in his first-ever start vs. the Marlins on April 23...struck out a then career-high eight...made his first big league relief appearance on April 9 at Colorado...began the year as the Astros fifth starter, but was moved into the bullpen with Houston having two off days on the first road trip (April 8-18).
2001
Rookie lefthander did not allow a run in his first two big league starts (13IP)...received no-decision in the 2-1, 11-inning win at Philadelphia (Aug. 23)...left after six innings with a 1-0 lead...allowed two runs in 17.2 innings of work...suffered a partial tear in his rotator cuff while diving back into second base on Aug. 29 against Cincinnati, forcing him to miss the rest of the season...made his Major League debut on Aug. 18 vs. Pittsburgh in an emergency start for Shane Reynolds, who was sidelined with a strained lower back...combined with Octavio Dotel on a two-hit, 3-0 shutout over the Pirates...learned of his start approximately an hour-and-a-half before game time...the shutout was the Astros fourth of the season and only the club's second-ever at Minute Maid Park...became the first lefthander to start for the Astros since Mike Hampton on Oct. 3, 1999 vs. Los Angeles in the final regularseason game in the Astrodome...Houston entered the game with the longest streak in the Majors without starting a lefty (284 games)...2000 was the first in franchise history without a game started by a lefthander....the 23rd pitcher used by the Astros this season, tying the club record set in 1965 and tied last year...recalled from Double A Round Rock on August 15 when righthander Brian Powell was outrighted to Triple A New Orleans...first player born in the 1980s (April 22, 1980) to play for the Astros...since 1991, is the first Houston pitcher and just the third Astros player to jump from Double A to the Majors...righthander Chris Gardner was the last pitcher to jump from Double A to Houston, accomplishing the feat in 1991, the same year infielder Jeff Bagwell skipped Triple A en route to the Majors...was 12-3 with a 3.69 ERA (57ER/139IP) over 24 games (23 starts) for Round Rock...struck out 167 with 69 walks...named to the Texas League Post-Season All-Star Team...was 10-1 with a 3.44 ERA (44ER/115IP) over 19 starts from May-August...was 7-1 with a 3.55 ERA (30ER/76IP) in 13 starts on the road at Double A...won six straight games over nine starts from May 4-June 15...struck out 16 batters on July 2 vs. Arkansas...pitched in the Futures Game the past two seasons...product of the Astros Venezuelan Academy...pitched five perfect innings vs. the Astros with three strikeouts for Round Rock in an exhibition game on April 1 at Minute Maid Park...made the Astros 40-man roster for the first time and made three relief appearances in spring training, allowing one hit and no runs in 2.1 innings.
