In 1988 graduated from Eisenhower High School in Yakima, Washington, where he was MVP of the baseball and basketball teams...also played football...was team captain of the baseball team his senior year and hit .570 with 7hr...played Little League in Salem, Oregon and Pony League and American Legion ball in Yakima...attended Washington State University from 1989-91 and helped the Cougars win the Pac 10 North championship all 3 seasons...in 1991 was WSU's captain and MVP...in 1989 and 1990 played in the Alaskan League...was a member of the 1990 U.S. team that played at the Goodwill Games...is a self-taught guitarist and an avid fly fisherman.

Produced the best season of his career...established career highs in games (152), hitting (.284), at bats (550), runs (87), hits (156), RBI (82), walks (72) and total bases (231)...tied his career high in home runs (15)...shared with teammate Erubiel Durazo the American League Player of the Week Award for 6/7-6/13 (10-20, .500, 9r, 2hr, 11rbi)...led all American League first basemen in games (148), total chances (1,377) and putouts (1,281)...his 148 apps at 1B were the most by an A's player since Mark McGwire played 152g in 1991...participated in 135 double plays, an Oak record for a first baseman and the most by an Athletics 1B since 1955 (Vic Power, 140dp)...led the club in games played and sacrifice flies (8)...his 152 apps were the fewest by an Athletics team leader since Scott Spezio played in a team-high 147g in 1997...produced a .367 on-base percentage...struck out just 48 times in 638 plate apps, the best ratio in the American League (1k/13.3pa)...for the fourth consecutive season and sixth time in his career walked more than he struck out... had the second-highest percentage of pitches taken in the AL (63.9%) to John Olerud (64.7%), the secondlowest percentage of swings that missed (7.9%) to David Eckstein (7.6%) and the fourth-lowest percentage of swinging at the first pitch (12.2%)...as a first baseman hit .279, third-best average for AL players at that position...with the bases loaded went 8-for-13 (.615) with 2 grand slams and 23rbi...among AL batting leaders with the bases loaded ranked T3rd in hitting, T4th in grand slams and T5th in RBI...hit .285 vs LHP and .283 vs RHP...hit .291 with RISP, including .403 with RISP the first 3 months of the season and .202 with RISP the last 3 months of the year...hit .326 in May, .333 in June and .352 in August...entered the game on 9/6 with a .310 batting average but went 14-for-92 (.153) over his last 25g to finish at .284.

Had a career high 34 doubles...batted .253 which was the second lowest average of his career (.245 in 2001)...his 66 walks were second on the club and he finished third among A's regulars with a .342 on-base percentage...struck out just 53 times in 622 plate appearances, an average of 11.7 plate appearances per strikeout which tied for the third best ratio in the American League...had the highest percent of pitches taken (67.1%) and the lowest percentage of swinging at the first pitch (6.3%) in the majors...swung and missed at just 8.8 percent of his pitches which was third lowest in the AL...had 12 home runs and 61 RBI...the A's went 10-1 in games in which he homered, winning the first 10 before losing in the final game of the season...seven of his 12 home runs gave the A's the lead...his .253 batting average broke down to .255 (38 for 149) against left handed pitching and .253 (99 for 392) against right handed pitching...however, hit 10 of his 12 home runs against right-handers...batted .311 during the day and .221 at night...average improved to .310 with runners in scoring position... made his RBI count as 28 of his 61 RBI either tied the game or put the A's ahead...had 27 of his 61 RBI in the seventh inning or later and he had seven game winning hits in the seventh inning or later...including "walk-off" hits on June 18 against Texas, a single in the 11th inning of a 4-3 win, and August 26 against Baltimore, a pinch-hit single in the 12th inning of a 2- 1 win...appeared in 128 games at first base, making 126 starts, and also hit .226 (12 for 53) with no home runs and three RBI in 13 starts at designated hitter...saw most of his playing time hitting second where he made 89 starts...also made nine starts hitting leadoff but was 2 for 35 (.057) with one walk and three hit by pitches...hit .315 (29 for 92) in 26 games in April...was named AL Player of the Week for the week of April 7 when he hit .522 with four doubles, a home run, seven RBI and five walks in six games...including three straight three-hit games against Texas, April 8-10...went 9 for 13 with four doubles and six RBI in that three-game series, including an Oakland record tying three doubles on the 10th...reached base in 10 consecutive plate appearances, including seven hits and three walks, from April 9-11...fell one short of the Oakland record for consecutive hits...started in the leadoff spot for the first time in his career on May 1 at Chicago...snapped a 0 for 18 streak with a sixth inning single on May 3 at New York...snapped a 29-game, 121-at bat homerless streak with the game winning three-run home run in the eighth inning of the A's 5-4 win over Montreal on June 14...had a 44-game errorless streak from May 2 to June 30...committed just three errors in 77 games at first base before the All-Star Break but then made one error in each of his first three games at first base after the break at Minnesota...had his third career two-homer game on July 27 at Anaheim...homered to lead off a game for the first time in his career on August 28 against Baltimore...started all five games at first base against Boston in the ALDS but was just 3 for 17 (.176) with a team leading five walks.
2002
Posted career highs in triples (4) and home runs (15)...hit safely in all five Division Series games against Minnesota and batted a team leading .500 (7 for 14) with three walks for a .588 on-base percentage...his four triples during the regular season tied for the A's team lead...finished second on the A's in walks (68) and averaged 4.15 pitches per plate appearance which ranked third in the American League...his batting average broke down to .233 against left-handers and .291 against right-handers...made a team leading 88 starts at first base...had never played first base prior to 2002 and had appeared in just one game at a position other that catcher (third base)...hit .296 (45 for 152) with seven home runs and 20 RBI as the A's designated hitter...his 41 starts at DH were second on the club to Durham's 43...led A's designated hitters in batting, home runs and RBI...went 0 for 4 in an Opening Night start at designated hitter but then reached base safely via hit, walk or hit by pitch in 26 consecutive games through May 5...had a pinch-hit single on April 9 at Texas to snap a 0 for 19 streak as a pinch-hitter dating back to September 7, 2000 at Detroit...had a 10-game hitting streak from April 20 to May 1...hit three home runs in April, matching his season total in 94 games with Boston in 2001...made his Major League debut at first base on May 7 against Boston after a pinch-hitting appearance...first start at first base came on May 11 against Toronto...had his second career two-homer game on May 31 at Tampa Bay...the A's won that game and were 12-2 in games in which he homered for the season...had a career high tying four hits on August 18 against Chicago...had one of the A's biggest home runs of the season as he delivered the pinch-hit game ending home run on September 4 against Kansas City in the A's 12-11 win...the home run came after the A's blew an 11-0 lead and it gave them an American League record 20 consecutive wins...it was his career high 13th home run of the season...seven of his 15 home runs gave the A's lead and another tied the game...hit .355 in September, the best one month average of his career (.350 in September, 1999)...hit his first career postseason home run in the first inning of Game 3 of the Division Series at Minnesota.

Hit a career low .245 in 94 games with Boston...added three home runs and 25 RBI, also the lowest totals of his four full major league seasons...appeared in 72 games as a catcher, making 65 starts...also made six starts at designated hitter and was 0 for 17 with three walks and four strikeouts as a pinch hitter...tossed out 10 of 125 (8.0%) attempted base stealers which ranked last among major league catchers...started at every spot in the order except first and fourth and made most of his starts batting second (25), eighth (19) and sixth (11)...batted .260 (59 for 227) against right handed pitchers and .176 (9 for 51) against left handers...hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot off Jason Grimsley, on April 29 vs. Kansas City...went 4 for 4 with a double against Toronto on June 24, his first four-hit game since September 24, 1998...had his second four-hit game of the year on June 30 at Toronto, going 4 for 6 with a RBI...finished June with a .262 (16 for 61) average with six doubles and five RBI in 22 games...hit his second home run on July 17 at Montreal off Troy Mattes...batted .305 (25 for 82) with eight doubles in July and his safely in 16 of his 22 games in the month...belted his second career grand slam on August 6 vs. Texas off Juan Moreno...hit into a triple play in his previous at bat in the sixth inning, becoming the first player since 1901 to hit into a triple play and then hit a grand slam in the same game...was 3 for 8 (.375) with the bases loaded for the season...stole the first base of his major league career on August 19 against Baltimore...hit .250 (9 for 36) in 14 games in August...batted safely in five of his final six games (6 for 22, .273) with two doubles and four RBI.
2000
As a pinch hitter ranked eighth in the American League in batting average (7-24, .292, .542slg)...made 43 starts at catcher and 16 starts at DH...in June hit .317 (2hr, 9rbi)...on 9/3 vs Sea made his only career appearance at third base...in that game pinch hit for Manny Alexander in the bottom of the eighth inning and took the hot corner in the top of the ninth.
1999
Appeared in just 30 games while battling a right elbow injury...began the season 3-for-25 (.120) before he went on the disabled list with a strained right elbow on 4/16...returned to the DL again on 5/17, retroactive to 5/16, and on 5/24 had arthroscopic surgery to remove scar tissue in that shoulder...on 7/5 was transfered to the 60-day DL...made rehab apps at GCL Red Sox, Class A Sarasota and Class AAA Pawtucket...when he came off the DL hit safely in 12 of his last 15g of the season (.362, 1hr, 9rbi)...overall hit .409 with runners in scoring position...caught Game 4 of the American League Division Series against the Indians and in the 23-7 Sox win went 1-for-1 with an RBI.
1998
Produced a career-high .446 slugging percentage...on 4/30 vs the Angels caught 3 baserunners attempting to steal, including 2 in the first inning...in June hit .291 with 2hr and 17rbi in 17g...in August hit .349 with 2hr and 7rbi in 18g...in the American League Division Series against the Indians started at catcher in Games 1, 3 and 4.
1997
Was a TOPPS Rookie All-Star...among all American League rookies ranked fourth in doubles (23), walks (40) and multi-hit games (27) and fifth in HR (10), RBI (44), extra-base hits (34) and total bases (152)...made 93 starts behind the plate...on 5/7 vs the Twins recorded the first 2 homers of his career...in 26g in June hit .321...on 8/8 vs KC went 4-for-4 with 3 doubles...on 9/19 vs the WSox teamed with Curtis Pride to tie a Major League record for pinch-hit homers by a team in an inning (2)...hit .293 vs RHP.
1996
Spent most of the season at Class AAA Pawtucket...made 6 apps for the Red Sox in July and August, including a pair of starts on 7/22 and 7/23 vs the Royals...following the minor league playoffs was recalled in September when rosters expanded and spent the rest of the season in Bos.
1995
In his Major League debut appeared in a pair of September games for the Red Sox...made his first career appearance on 9/8 at NYY, produced a pinch-hit single off the right field wall off David Cone and scored his first run...while with Pawtucket, on 8/31 vs Norfolk established a PawSox record when he threw out 5 of 7 baserunners who attempted to steal.
