2006
A year after having surgery on his right elbow, Escobar started 30 games for the Angels in 2006. Angels signed him to a $28.5-million, three-year contract extension during the season. He finished with an 11-14 record, though his ERA of 3.61 was the sixth-lowest in the American League. He had the lowest ERA for any pitcher in the Majors with a losing record (minimum 15 starts). Escobar was hurt by poor defense behind him (Major League-high 17 unearned runs allowed) and a lack of run support (Angels scored three runs or fewer in 11 of his 14 defeats). His best month came in July, when Escobar posted a 2-0 record with a 2.77 ERA in four starts. After going on the disabled list with elbow irritation on July 7, Escobar finished the season with a 5-5 record and a 3.27 ERA. He threw eight innings of two-hit, shutout ball against the Tigers on Sept. 3. Escobar lost seven straight decisions from May 17 to June 25, though he allowed three earned runs or more in just two of those eight starts. He reached 1,000 strikeouts in his first start of the season on April 7 against the Yankees. Escobar pitched for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic and had a 1-1 record and a 0.00 ERA (1 R, 0 ER, 5 BB, 5 K) in two games (one start).
