In 1992 graduated from Oviedo (FL) High School, where he was a member of the baseball and basketball teams...was drafted out of high school by the Padres in the 37th round of the draft but elected to attend Auburn University...as a freshman tied for the Tigers' team lead in home runs (8)...helped Auburn to the 1994 College World Series by batting .342 with 12hr, 60rbi and 11 steals...in 1993-94 played for Team USA...his brother, Todd, pitched in the New York Mets organization from 1998-2000.

2006

Appeared in 115g for the National League West Division champion Padres...led the club with 38 pinch-hit at bats...made starts at 1B (11gs), 2B (10gs), 3B (34gs) and DH (1gs)...in the seventh inning on 7/15 vs Atl played right field, his first outfield appearance since 9/23/03...on 5/28 vs StL produced a seasonbest 4rbi with a 438-foot homer that ranks as the second-longest in PETCO Park history...from 4/29-5/4 hit .333 during a season-best 6-game hitting streak (8rbi)...3 times had a season-high 3 hits (4/30 vs LAD, 7/14 vs Atl, 7/25 at LAD)...from 5/27-6/3 made 7 consecutive starts and hit safely in 6 of those games (.292, 2hr, 6rbi)...hit .333 in April, his best month of the season...on 4/9 vs Col produced his first hit as a Padre, a pinchhit double...on 4/14 at Atl made his first start of the season, played 2B and went 2-for-4 with an RBI...on 4/26 vs Ari produced his first home run of the season...on 4/29 vs LAD made his first start of the season at 3B and went 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI...on 4/20 vs LAD made his first start at 1B since 8/29/02 and went 3- for-4 with the game-winning RBI in the 10th inning...became a free agent following the season...on 1/22 was signed by the Reds to a minor league contract with an invitation to Major League spring training camp.

Was the Cubs' Opening Day starter at third base...made 51 apps for Chi before he was traded to the Rockies on 6/20, along with RHP Travis Anderson, in exchange for SS Jose Hernandez...for Chi and Col combined to hit .221 with 2hr and 26rbi in 99 apps...made 61 starts overall, including 47 at 3B, 12 at 2B and 2 at SS...over the course of the season played every position but pitcher, catcher and left field...from 8/1-8/22 was on the Rockies' 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his right shoulder...on 5/17 at StL produced the second pinch-hit homer of his career (off Steve Kline).

2002

Made his first career Opening Day roster in his lone full season with the Cubs...batted .258 with a career-high 27 home runs and 56 RBI...his 27 homers established a new franchise record for most homers by a switch hitter...twice homered from each side of the plate in the same game, on 6/30 at WSox and 8/29 at Mil...in that game at Comiskey Park, hit a 2-run HR in the sixth inning from the right side and a ninthinning solo shot from the left...became the first Cub to homer from both sides of the plate since Ellis Burton accomplished the feat against the Milwaukee Braves on 9/7/64...later in the season, as part of the Cubs' 10-run fourth on 8/29 at Mil, homered from each side of the plate in that same inning (2-run from the right, 3- run from the left)...became only the second player in Major League history, and the first National Leaguer, to homer from both sides of the plate in the same inning (Cle's Carlos Baerga, 4/8/93 vs NYY)...started games at all 4 infield positions, with 77 at second base (63 starts), 36 at third (29 starts), 22 at first (seven starts) and 12 at shortstop (10 starts)...also made 1 appearance in left field, on 6/5 at Mil...became the first Cub ever to homer at all 4 infield positions in a single season...hit a grand slam (5/30 at Pit of Jimmy Anderson) and a pair of leadoff HR (7/26 at StL off Chuck Finley, 9/11 vs Mtl off Masato Yoshii)...batted leadoff 52 times and also hit second (16 times), fifth (twice), sixth (23 times), seventh (four times) and eigthth (12 times)... batted .273 (84-for-308) with 14 doubles, 19 homers, 33 RBI and 64 runs scored over his final 83 games... batted .241 with 17 homers from the left side and .303 with 10 home runs from the right...drove in all 3 runs in a 3-0 win at LAD on 5/5, going 2-for-4 with a solo homer and a 2-run single...his first career grand slam, on 5/30 at Pit off Jimmy Anderson, was a third-inning shot...from 6/28-7/6 had a season-high 8-game hitting streak (12-25, .480, 3hr).

2001

In his final season in the Athletics organization played for Oak and Class AAA Sacramento...appeared in 38g for the A's, including 12 apps at 2B, 9 apps at 3B, 5 apps at SS and 1 appearance in RF...while with Sacramento posted a .538 slugging percentage and a .370 on-base percentage...played 18 Triple-A games in the outfield, his first professional experience outside the infield.

2000

Made 9 apps for Oak...spent most of the season at Class AAA Sacramento, where he hit .266 with 17 doubles, 11 triples, 24 homers, 73rbi and a career-high 20 stolen bases...led the Pacific Coast League with 111 runs and 94 walks...ranked second in the PCL in triples...produced a .521 slugging percentage and a .399 on-base percentage...on 6/20 vs New Orleans became just the eighth player in Pacific Coast League history to record 3 triples in a game...on 7/9 vs Salt Lake tied the minor league season high with 6 runs scored...played 94g at 3B, 12g at 2B, 7g at SS and 4g at 1B...was promoted to Oak after rosters expanded in September.

1999

Appeared in only 29g because of a torn tendon in his left wrist....was on the disabled list from 4/8- 7/29...had a 12-game rehab assignment with the Arizona Rookie League A's (7/13-7/26) before appearing in 17g for Class AA Midland in July and August...hit .298 with a .412 OBP in the Texas League.

1998

Spent most of the season at Class AAA Edmonton, where he batted .249 with 20 doubles, 4 triples, 10 home runs and 44 RBI in 87 games...played 44 games at 3B, 34 at 2B, 3 at SS and 1 at 1B...also made 11 apps during 2 stints with the Athletics...played 5g at 3B, 2g at SS and 1g at 2B.

1997

Made his Major League debut in just his third professional season...in 68g for the Athletics hit .228 with 6hr and 19rbi...made 40 apps at 3B, 17 apps at 2B and 1 appearance at SS...made his big league debut on 6/10 at Det and singled off Willie Blair in his first career plate appearance...on 6/23 at Sea hit his first career home run (off Derek Lowe)...on 7/3 at SF hit his first career pinch-hit home run (off Doug Creek)...on 8/9 vs Mil hit his first Major League leadoff HR (off Jose Mercedes)...on 8/21 vs Bos went 4-for-4...also appeared in 70g for Class AAA Edmonton and helped the Trappers win the Pacific Coast League championship... for Edmonton hit .328 with 11hr, 46rbi, a .546 slugging percentage and a .472 on-base percentage...with 464walks ranked fourth in the PCL.

1996

Spent his first full season at Class AA Huntsville, where he hit .250 with 10hr, 71rbi and 19 steals in 131g...his 73 walks were the fifth-most in the Southern League...played 2B (57g), SS (57g) and 3B (12g).

1995

Made his professional debut playing shortstop at Single A Modesto, where he batted .258 with 6hr and 31rbi in 56 California League contests.
