Pirates acquire infielder/outfielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa from Toronto

The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired infielder/outfielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa (pronounced (KYE-nur fuh-LEH-fuh) from Toronto in exchange for minor league infielder/outfielder Charles McAdoo.

Kiner-Falefa was hitting .292 (75-for-257) with eight doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 33 RBI in 82 games with Toronto at the time he was acquired today by the Pirates.

The 29-year-old Kiner-Falefa, who is related to Pirates Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner, has made 327 appearances at shortstop, 192 at third base, 73 at catcher, 60 at second base, 42 in center field, 37 in left field and seven in right field since breaking into the big leagues with Texas in 2018.

In 2023, the versatile Kiner-Falefa became just the sixth different player in Yankees history (and just the third Yankees player in the last 110 years), to make at least 85 starts in a season and appear defensively at second base, thrid base, shortstop, and all three outfield positions.

Kiner-Falefa made his big league debut with Texas in 2018. He was named Texas’ Rookie of the Year after ranking among American League rookie leaders in hits (tied for sixth), stolen bases (tied for sixth), on-base percentage (seventh), doubles (tied for eighth) and batting average (ninth).

Kiner-Falefa has been named the recipient of his team’s Heart and Hustle Award three times in his career (2018, 2021 and 2023), which is presented annually to an active player who demonstrates a passion for the game of baseball and best embodies the values, spirit and traditions of the game.
