Updated predictions for Bucs' Opening Day
Pirates continue to look at prospects and work regulars as they craft their 25-man roster
BRADENTON, Fla. -- The Pirates have reached the midway point of Spring Training, but they still have a long way to go before their Opening Day roster fully takes shape.
The Pirates have yet to make any roster cuts. There are still 62 active players in the Bill McKechnie Clubhouse at LECOM Park. They've spent a lot of time looking at prospects who could help later this year, and they’ve eased many of their regulars -- especially their starting pitchers -- into game action.
Pittsburgh’s 25-man roster will come into focus over the next few weeks. At the start of Spring Training, MLB.com made an initial prediction for which players would break camp with the Major League team. Now, it’s time to revisit those picks.
Catcher (2): Francisco Cervelli, Jacob Stallings
What changed? Stallings is in and Elias Diaz is out, but it has nothing to do with performance. Diaz is just now beginning to work his way back from a virus that sidelined him for two weeks, so it’s hard to imagine him being game-ready by Opening Day. If Diaz starts the season on the injured list, the Pirates can delay their decision on what to do with the out-of-options Stallings by making him the backup.
First base (1): Josh Bell
What changed? Nothing. This is Bell’s job, and only an injury would change that.
Second base (1): Adam Frazier
What changed? Nothing. Frazier is the starter.
Third base (2): Jung Ho Kang, Colin Moran
What changed? Nothing yet. The Bucs haven’t tipped their hand about who will start. They have consistently said that Kang can earn the starting job if he gets back to looking like the Kang of 2015-16, and only time will tell if that’s the case.
Shortstop (2): Erik Gonzalez, Kevin Newman
What changed? Nothing yet. The Pirates would prefer to see one player claim the starting job, and they haven’t named a starter yet. Gonzalez seems like the favorite based on his glove and management’s comments during the offseason, but both players are both getting plenty of playing time this spring.
Outfield (3): Corey Dickerson, Starling Marte, Lonnie Chisenhall
What changed? As long as they stay healthy, the starting three won’t change until Gregory Polanco is ready to return. There will be a fourth outfielder, however, if there’s room on the bench for non-roster invitee Melky Cabrera. The Bucs value Cabrera’s experience and switch-hitting bat, and he could very well claim a spot on the bench to start the season.
Utility (1): Pablo Reyes
What changed? Nothing. Reyes is still the most logical candidate to fill the Pirates' super-utility role, and he’s getting plenty of looks in center field and around the infield this spring. Perhaps they would send him to Triple-A to start the season if Cabrera is their fourth outfielder, and they don’t have another spot on the bench. For now, we’ll give Reyes the nod based on his versatility.
Starting pitcher (5): Jameson Taillon, Trevor Williams, Joe Musgrove, Chris Archer, Jordan Lyles
What changed? Nothing. The fifth-starter competition rolls on with Lyles, Nick Kingham, Steven Brault and Rookie Davis all still in play. For now, we’ll stay with our pre-Spring Training prediction based on GM Neal Huntington’s comment that Lyles has the “inside track.”
Relief pitcher (8): Felipe Vazquez, Keone Kela, Kyle Crick, Richard Rodriguez, Francisco Liriano, Tyler Lyons, Nick Burdi, Kingham
What changed? Nothing yet. The top four are set; the rest is somewhat of a mystery. Will the Bucs carry seven relievers or eight? Will one or more of the fifth-starter candidates move to the bullpen? What will they do with veteran non-roster invitees like Liriano and Lyons? Will they carry Burdi for two months to remove his Rule 5 Draft restrictions, or send back the former Rule 5 Draft pick? Where does Brault fit? For now, we’ll stick with this group of eight. If it’s a seven-man ‘pen, they’ll have room to carry Reyes and Cabrera on the Opening Day bench.
