Skenes shuts down AL's stacked lineup in scoreless start

ARLINGTON -- Pirates rookie phenom passed his first Midsummer Classic test with flying colors in Tuesday night’s All-Star Game presented by Mastercard at Globe Life Field, despite his National League's eventual 5-3 loss to the American League.

As the NL starter, Skenes tossed a scoreless first inning on 16 pitches (11 strikes). Of those, seven were his trademark splinker.

The 22-year-old Skenes flashed his triple-digit velocity, maxing out at 100.1 mph as he tallied four swings and misses against the best the American League had to offer. Steven Kwan (MLB-best .352 average) popped out to shortstop and Gunnar Henderson (28 homers) sent a comebacker to Skenes, who easily threw over to first for the out. Juan Soto (MLB-high 79 walks) worked a free pass to set up a highly anticipated matchup against slugger Aaron Judge (MLB-high 34 homers), who grounded out to third base on the first pitch.

NL manager Torey Lovullo tipped his hand Monday when asked if Skenes might receive a second inning should he pitch a quick first.

“Most likely, no,” Lovullo said. “We have 11, 12 pitchers to get through. Going back to what I just said, I want to make sure that we're fair to everybody and give them a chance to go out there and compete. So [pitching coach] Brent Strom is working on that right now downstairs. That's probably the hardest part of being the manager, in my early opinion, is trying to get every pitcher in the game.

“So I would love to. I'd love to watch him for two. Actually, I'd love to tire him out enough so he can't make one of his next starts because it will be against the Diamondbacks. I don't think that's going to happen.”

AL starter Corbin Burnes, who pitched a scoreless top of the first, watched Skenes’ performance on the clubhouse TV and was impressed.

"Kid’s got good stuff,” Burnes said. “He’s had a great start to his career. Obviously, he was only drafted about a year ago, so it’s crazy to be on the ride he’s been on for the last year. But yeah, he’s got incredible stuff, great arm. He should have a pretty long career in this game."
