Bednar slowed this spring by lat tightness
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- David Bednar is currently dealing with right lat tightness, explaining why the Pirates’ closer has not appeared in a game yet this Spring Training.
The two-time All-Star felt the discomfort during his throwing program recently and is currently not throwing, though he does not seem too worried about the severity of the injury.
"Just precautionary this time of year," Bednar said. "Just trying to be smart and hopefully be back soon."
Manager Derek Shelton said that Bednar will be a no-throw “for a few days” before the team reassesses him.
“He’s gonna have some rest, and then once he starts throwing again, I think we’ll have a better idea of where he’s actually at and know how he feels,” Shelton said.
The Pirates have considerable bullpen depth, adding Aroldis Chapman this offseason to a group that features Colin Holderman, Carmen Mlodzinski, Ryan Borucki and others, but losing Bednar for an extended period of time would be a significant blow. The bullpen is also currently awaiting word on Dauri Moreta, who exited Sunday’s game with an elbow issue.
Bednar said he has never dealt with an injury like this before, but he remains optimistic that he will not be sidelined for too long.
“It's nothing I'm overly concerned about,” Bednar said.
