Greinke throws 2 scoreless frames vs. Indians

Lovullo to be more flexible with lineups; Duplantier sharp in 'B' game

March 7th, 2019

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- threw two scoreless innings in Thursday’s 4-3 loss to the Indians at Salt River Fields.

Greinke allowed one hit and walked two while striking out three.

“The offspeed was way better,” Greinke said. “I got a lot of swings and misses on it. Stuff was decent. Location was decent. Spring Training start, for the most part, is what it felt like. Nothing to be upset about, but I’ve got to get better.”

The Indians made him throw a lot of pitches (48) for just two innings, and he went down to the bullpen afterwards to throw 10 more pitches.

“It was nothing intense,” Greinke said. “It was just that I threw a lot of pitches and wanted to move my arm a little, at least.”

Rethinking lineups

D-backs manager Torey Lovullo plans on being more flexible when it comes to his starting lineups this year.

Lovullo makes up his lineup at least a day in advance, and if he planned on giving a player the next day off he would stick with that even if a player had a big game at the plate. That happened last year when left fielder David Peralta had four hits in a game twice and five hits in another game, yet did not play on the day following those games.

“It’s hard when somebody gets four hits to be taken out of the game the next day,” Lovullo said. “Even if that’s the best thing for him, and the rest and the matchup and all that stuff, I think it might have allowed the opposition [to think], ‘Oh, David Peralta’s not playing today. Either the manager was drinking too much last night or this organization is crazy.’ There are too many things that are left open-ended. I will consider -- strongly consider -- playing somebody the next day after he gets four hits.”

“B” game but “A” stuff

Right-hander Jon Duplantier, who is Arizona’s No. 2 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, threw three innings in an instrasquad back-field game Thursday.

“I saw two-thirds of his outing,” Lovullo said. “It looked real good. [Catcher] John Ryan Murphy came back and said the stuff was real sharp and effective, spraying in and out of the zone with command. Those are good things, those are really good things for a young pitcher at this point in time.”

Duplantier is a long shot to make the team out of camp, but could be one of their first pitching callups during the season.

, who is battling for the closer’s role, also threw in the back-field game.

“The fastball command was a little bit better than it was the last time,” Lovullo said. “The secondary stuff was extremely sharp. I got a chance to cross paths with him in the training room, and just by looking at him, I think he’s really pleased with his outing.”

Roster move

The D-backs reassigned right-hander Troy Scribner to Minor League camp and now have 62 players left in camp. The team is expected to make even more roster reductions once it returns from its two-game series in Mexico over the weekend.

Up next

will get the start Friday afternoon when the D-backs travel to Maryvale to take on the Brewers at 12:05 p.m. MST. Closer candidate Bradley is also scheduled to pitch, as is , who also figures to be a late-inning weapon for Arizona.
