was reinstated from the restricted list and returned to the 15-day injured list. The right-hander will rejoin the team in San Diego on Friday, the Padres announced. To make room on the 40-man roster for Darvish, the Padres designated infielder Matthew Batten for assignment.

Darvish initially went on the injured list with a left groin strain on June 4. He made a rehab start on June 19, but he was placed on the restricted list on July 6 in order to deal with an undisclosed personal family matter.

Darvish’s return could provide a big boost for the Padres club that entered Friday in possession of the second National League Wild Card spot with a 72-57 record.

Over his first 11 starts this season, Darvish posted a 3.20 ERA with 53 strikeouts and 15 walks in 56 1/3 innings.

The Padres recently got back Joe Musgrove from injury as well, so Darvish’s impending return will give the team a fully healthy rotation for the first time in months.

San Diego's bullpen could also get back a key piece soon, as left-hander Wandy Peralta began a rehab assignment with Single-A Lake Elsinore on Friday. Peralta has been on the 15-day IL since July 10 with a left adductor strain.
