Darvish looking for new ways to reel in Trout

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- There aren't many hitters who can say they have Yu Darvish's number, but Angels center fielder Mike Trout is one of them.

In 34 career plate appearances against the Rangers' right-hander, Trout is hitting .321 with a .441 on-base percentage and four home runs.

The two met for the first time in 2014 on Tuesday at Tempe Diablo Stadium. Darvish says he has a few tricks up his sleeve, but he isn't tipping his hand for the upcoming season.

"I only threw fastballs," said Darvish, who allowed two runs on three hits in three innings in his second outing of the spring. "I didn't want to show him anything else. I think the approach toward Trout is going to be a little bit different this year."

Trout went 1-for-2 against Darvish on Tuesday, and the lone out he made was a scorcher right at Rangers left fielder Shin-Soo Choo.

But Trout had a hunch Darvish wasn't unleashing his full arsenal on him this early in Spring Training. He's eager to see what the Japanese ace has in store during the regular season.

"It's going to be interesting," Trout said. "I'm curious to see what he does, see what happens. It's going to be fun to watch."

Both Trout and Darvish broke onto the scene in 2012, and they've become two of the American League's biggest superstars.

Regardless of who wins the battle, Trout said he has always enjoyed facing Darvish, one of the best the game has to offer.

"Over the years, facing him, we've had a little rivalry going," Trout said. "It's pretty cool. He's throwing his best stuff, and I'm trying to hit his best stuff. We're having fun out there, and that's how it should be."

The Halos welcome the Rangers to Angel Stadium May 2-4.
