Astros’ All-Stars lead the way in rout over Blue Jays

TORONTO -- Leave it to the All-Stars.

For six innings on Wednesday night, the Astros were locked in a close contest against the Blue Jays. was the first to step up, and ignited the definitive rally in a 9-2 win at Rogers Centre.

It’s been a scorching series for Alvarez, who homered for the third time in as many games as part of a three-extra-base-hit, three-RBI night.

After tying things up with a 111.4 mph RBI double in the third, Alvarez sent a fastball from lefty Yusei Kikuchi 395 feet to right field to put the Astros ahead by one in the sixth.

As the Blue Jays tied things up in the bottom half of the sixth, the Astros needed another push. Enter Altuve, who kicked off a four-run seventh with an RBI single after Chas McCormick reached on an error and Jon Singleton launched a pinch-hit double.

It didn’t end there. The Blue Jays intentionally walked Alvarez to load the bases with one out, handing Houston a golden opportunity to add to their lead. They did so in conventional fashion at first -- on a two-run single from Yainer Diaz -- and then in more painful ways, as reliever Jose Cuas hit Jake Meyers and Jeremy Peña on back-to-back pitches to add another run for the Astros.

Alvarez had one more big at-bat in him, too, adding a second RBI double in the eighth, while Diaz crafted his own three-hit, three-RBI night with another run-scoring single that inning.

That offensive display came just hours after it was announced that Alvarez and Altuve had been voted in as starters for the AL team in this year’s All-Star Game, but the Astros may have one more All-Star in their midst.

Ronel Blanco wasn’t as dominant as in his first start of the season against the Blue Jays -- when he pitched his first career no-hitter on April 1 at Minute Maid Park -- but continued to make his own case for a trip to Arlington, allowing two earned runs with four strikeouts, two walks and four hits over 5 2/3 innings.
