Conforto needs ballot push to join leaderboard
NEW YORK -- Yoenis Cespedes and Jay Bruce remained in the top 15 vote-getters among National League outfielders, with Cespedes in ninth place (430,879) and Bruce (322,023) in 13th in the latest update for the Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot, which was released Monday.
Cespedes has missed a majority of the season with hamstring and quad injuries, but he is the Mets' top vote-getter. In just 20 games this season, he is hitting .275 with seven home runs and 14 RBIs. Bruce, who started the season hot but has since cooled, has 16 home runs and 43 RBIs while hitting .258 heading into Monday's game against the Cubs.
While Bruce and Cespedes are in contention to make the All-Star team, perhaps the more worthy candidate to represent the Mets is fellow outfielder Michael Conforto. He currently ranks in the top six in the Majors in on-base percentage (.412) and OPS (1.004). Conforto also has the second-highest offensive WAR among NL outfielders (2.5), only trailing Charlie Blackmon of the Rockies. Conforto is not listed on the ballot, thus fans must write him in if they want to see him participate as a starter in Miami.
