12 facts for 12 straight Yankees wins
The Yankees have had some of the greatest teams to ever take the field throughout baseball history. From the Murderer's Row lineup of 1927 to the 114-win club of 1998 and beyond, the Bronx has been home to some incredible collections of talent.
So when the 2021 Yankees won their 12th straight game on Thursday night against the A's at the Oakland Coliseum, the fact that it was the first time they had done so in 60 years was certainly noteworthy. The 7-6 victory put the Yanks in some fine company in franchise history. Here's what to know about the historic feat:
1. Prior to Thursday's victory, the Yankees hadn't won 12 or more in a row since a 13-game winning streak from Sept. 1-12, 1961.
2. The Yankees have had two streaks end at 11 straight wins since 1961. The first was from Sept. 16-26, 1964. The other was from Aug. 31-Sept. 10, 1985.
3. Prior to the Yankees reaching a dozen straight victories on Thursday, 23 other teams had winning streaks of 12 or more since the Yanks' 13-game streak in 1961.
4. The Yankees' longest losing streak between 12-game win streaks from 1961-2021 was nine, which New York reached twice -- from Oct. 1, 1972-April 9, 1973; and Sept. 13-21, 1982.
5. The longest win streak in Yankees history is 19, which they achieved from June 29-July 17, 1947.
6. The American League record for consecutive victories belongs to the 2017 Indians (22), and the National League record belongs to the 1916 New York Giants (26). The Yankees have three more games at Oakland before a three-game series at Angel Stadium next week. They then return to Yankee Stadium for three against the Orioles and then four against the Blue Jays.
7. During this 12-game win streak, the Yankees have beaten the White Sox, Angels, Red Sox, Twins, Braves and A's.
8. The Yankees have won 12 or more consecutive games 11 times (1905, '06, '26, '39, '41, '47, '53, '54, '60, '61 and 2021). Eight of those teams reached the World Series.
9. Prior to Thursday's victory, the last time the club had a streak of 12 or more wins came on Sept. 12, 1961. This was New York's lineup that day in a 4-3 win over the White Sox at Comiskey Park for their 13th consecutive victory:
- Bobby Richardson 2B
- Tony Kubek SS
- Roger Maris RF
- Mickey Mantle CF
- Elston Howard C
- Bill Skowron 1B
- Hector Lopez LF
- Clete Boyer 3B
- Ralph Terry P
10. The Yankees had 11 seasons with 100 wins or more between streaks of 12 or more consecutive wins, including the 114-48 team that won the World Series in 1998. The others came in '63, '77, '78, '80, 2002-04, '09, '18-19. Three of those teams won the World Series (1977-78, and 2009).
11. The longest win streak for the 1927 Yankees -- also known as the "Murderer's Row" Yankees featuring Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Earle Combs, Mark Koenig and Bob Meusel -- was nine, from June 13-June 23.
12. The longest streak for the 1998 team that won 114 games was 10, from June 30-July 12.
