Yankees' bullpen runs out of steam in 12th vs. Guards

NEW YORK -- The Yankees could not capitalize on multiple late opportunities before the floodgates opened as they absorbed their eighth extra-inning loss of the season, falling to the Guardians, 9-5, in 12 frames on Tuesday evening at Yankee Stadium.

Lane Thomas broke the tie with a pinch-hit, run-scoring double off Tim Mayza in the 12th and David Fry cleared the bases with a big three-run triple off Michael Tonkin, sending fans streaming for the exits. Jake Cousins pitched well in relief, inducing a bases-loaded double play that kept the game tied in the 10th inning and pinning two men aboard in the 11th.

New York whiffed on a two-on, one-out chance in the 10th, though, as Trent Grisham fouled out and Alex Verdugo grounded out against All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase. DJ LeMahieu heard boos after a strikeout and Oswaldo Cabrera flied out to strand two men in the 11th.

Juan Soto and Aaron Judge sparked the Yankees’ offense with back-to-back homers in the first inning off left-hander Matthew Boyd, marking their fifth consecutive homers of the season – one shy of a franchise record set in 2009, when Johnny Damon and Mark Teixeira belted back-to-back blasts six times.
