Looking to avoid falling into the vaunted 3-0 hole, the Yankees will go with the same lineup from Game 2 as the series shifts to the Bronx, where they will look to overcome a quiet offensive start to the series.
Pitching dominated the first two games of the series in Houston, as the Yankees are hitting just .159 and scored just one run in each game. The Astros haven't been much hotter, hitting .190 and scoring a pair of runs in each of the first two contests.
The Astros have made a few changes as they prepare to face the first left-handed starter they've seen this series. As such, was left out of the lineup and Evan Gattis will see his first action of the series, starting at catcher. The defensively versatile has shifted from left field to first base, which will put in left and move Yuli Gurriel to designated hitter, a position occupied by during the first two games. is the lone left-handed batter in the starting nine.
The Astros are hitting .280 against left-handed pitchers this year, tied for second best in the Majors, including an MLB-best .317 in the postseason.
As for the Yankees, the struggles of AL MVP candidate this postseason have been well-chronicled, as the slugging right fielder has struck out 19 times in 31 at-bats, while catcher is mired in an 0-for-12 funk dating back to the AL Division Series. Manager Joe Girardi expressed confidence in the pair on Sunday to break out of their respective slumps.
"I mean, there's been a lot of great hitters that struggled the first year in the postseason, the second year in the postseason and the third year in the postseason, and they have a big postseason," Girardi said on Sunday. "So I feel good about them. We've counted on them all year. We believe in them and I think they're going to come out of it."
