Cubs adding additional safety netting to Wrigley

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Cubs will install additional netting behind home plate at Wrigley Field in hopes of providing a safe environment for fans.

Cubs spokesman Julian Green said Wednesday the team will add netting in front of the field-level seats from the end of one dugout to the other, and within 70 feet of home plate.

On Wednesday, the Commissioner's Office issued recommendations to all 30 teams aimed at enhancing the safety of fans while also preserving the interactive elements that are integral to the fan experience. The recommendations were a result of a review that began earlier this summer.

Other notes from the Winter Meetings

• The Rule 5 Draft will be held Thursday on the final day of the Winter Meetings, and the Cubs most likely will not make a selection. The 40-man roster is at 39.

However, the Cubs may lose some of their Minor Leaguers to other teams.

"I'd be surprised if we didn't [lose someone]," Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said. "We had some difficult decisions to make [regarding the 40-man roster], and usually when you have difficult decisions, you might lose somebody. We have a good farm system."

The Cubs did have success with the Rule 5 Draft in 2012, picking Hector Rondon, who is now the closer.
