CHICAGO -- The elements played havoc with D-backs defenders in a 5-1 win for the Cubs on Friday at Wrigley Field.

With the wind blowing in at 25 mph from center -- and gusting around 40 mph -- any fly ball was going to be an adventure. And with the bases loaded and Kris Bryant at the plate in the bottom of the second, what normally would have been a lazy fly ball became a two-run double to give the North Siders a 2-0 lead.

"Extraordinarily different wind conditions," said Cubs manager Joe Maddon, who likened the conditions to the Giants' old stadium in San Francisco. "That makes Candlestick [Park] look tame right there. That was unbelievable."

When Bryant lofted an 0-1 changeup from Arizona starter Merrill Kelly high into short center field, there was a sense that anything could happen -- and it did. As D-backs defenders looked up into the sunny blue sky, they scrambled to try to get a read on the ball. The ball was blown in and toward short right-center, and as it descended, the roar from the crowd grew steadily. It soon erupted, as second baseman Wilmer Flores fell down and the ball dropped between him and first baseman Christian Walker.

Flores said the sun was also hindering him on the play.

"I lost the ball in the sun," Flores said. "So by the time I saw the ball, it was late. It was nowhere near me."

The baserunners were going with two outs, and David Bote and Kyle Schwarber scored easily.

"Oh my God," Maddon said. "Everybody knows the wind's blowing, but it still catches you by surprise, because it drifted that far. So, once that occurred, everybody was kind of on a alert a little bit more. But that thing moved a lot -- a lot."
