White Sox-Yankees postponed; DH Thursday

June 7th, 2023

NEW YORK -- The White Sox might have liked to play Wednesday night’s game at Yankee Stadium, if only for the fact that they are 4-0 during the month of June behind a season-high four-game winning streak.

But they also understood the postponement based on “clearly hazardous air quality conditions,” as announced by Major League Baseball. The clubs have been rescheduled for a single-admission doubleheader on Thursday, with the first pitch set for 3:05 p.m. CT. The second game will start no earlier than 6:05 p.m. CT.

“We're 1-0 in the series,” White Sox first baseman said. “Got the early win, and it would have been good to come back and play today.”

“I was always taught, ‘Control what you can control and don’t worry about what you can’t control,’” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “We have to get ready to play tomorrow.”

Smoky conditions stemming from Canadian wildfires turned the playing field into an orange haze on Wednesday afternoon. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation issued an air quality alert in effect until midnight. As of 4 p.m. ET, the air quality index (AQI) for Yankee Stadium was 335, which is considered hazardous.

MLB said that the decision to postpone Wednesday’s game in the Bronx, as well as a contest between the Phillies and Tigers in Philadelphia, came following conversations throughout the day with medical and weather experts and all impacted clubs. Tuesday’s 3-2 victory for the White Sox was played in smoky conditions, although not nearly as severe as Wednesday.

But it was felt by the White Sox players in a couple of ways.

“You know, I had a cough this morning, sore chest, nothing too terrible,” Vaughn said. “Some of those balls went up and you kind of lose them for a second. It got a little hazy and you kind of lose them in the lights. It was definitely tough to see.”

“Physically, I didn’t feel anything, I felt normal. … Definitely smells like fire or something. Obviously can’t be too good. Felt a little different today,” White Sox second baseman said. “But popups were tough. The ball was blending in with the sky. That was kind of tough to see. This is probably the craziest. Nothing compared to this.”

will start Game 1 for the White Sox, opposite the Yankees’ . will follow for the White Sox in Game 2, as will  for the Yankees. Chicago wasn’t given the option to take batting practice Wednesday, but the club had already decided to cancel the session and work inside.

“If they are comfortable at setting up a doubleheader tomorrow at 4, it’s because things are going to get better,” Grifol said. “Today at one point, it was pretty bad out there. We walked out of the dugout and it was kind of orange.

“They did the right thing. They got all the information.”
