Four takeaways entering final week of Sox camp

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Here are four takeaways from White Sox Cactus League action.

Vaughn on the mend
After sustaining a right hip pointer injury while diving for a catch on Sunday, Andrew Vaughn said he felt “10-fold better” on Wednesday.

“I was kind of shocked how quickly I was starting to feel better,” Vaughn said. “I thought I would be on crutches for a week to two weeks, and the second day I came in and I threw the crutches in the training room and said, ‘I’m good.’

“Biggest thing is it’s just a nasty bruise. You have to get rid of the pressure. It’s all on feel, and I’m feeling really good right now.”

Vaughn was projected to return to game action in one to two weeks, according to the White Sox original report. He took some swings on Wednesday and stretched before the game, but he isn’t going to push things this early in the season.

“It’s kind of like the worst charley horse you've ever had. It just sticks around and it’s lingering,” Vaughn said. “But it’s going away. Have a lineman hit you with his helmet, that’s what I’ve been told it feels like.”

“One thing he’s got going for him is the first couple of weeks, he’s put in a full spring so far of work, and he had worked coming here so he’s in good shape, which means he should get ready sooner,” manager Tony La Russa said. “He was sore, and you don’t want to have to play him until it’s gone.”

Upon contact Sunday, Vaughn feared the worst. The ensuing results seem to be about the best-case scenario. Vaughn could start at designated hitter when he returns, but despite Sunday’s mishap, he feels more and more comfortable in right field.

“Actually, game reps help the most,” Vaughn said. “It has become more natural, it really has. Not doing it for forever until last year really, just being comfortable with [outfield coach Daryl Boston] working out there.

“As soon as I dove, I landed on my hip. Thought I was fine. Got up, wiggled around a little bit. Took that first step and it kind of gave out. My mind went to the worst thought. I’m up walking, and I feel pretty good now.”

Haseley in the mix
Adam Haseley was not available for Wednesday’s 7-0 win over the Rangers, but the 25-year-old will soon be a part of the White Sox outfield mix. The left-handed hitter was acquired from the Phillies in a trade for Minor League hurler McKinley Moore on Tuesday.

“Yeah, he’s getting here late, but we’ll add him to the mix,” La Russa said. “He’s a left-hand talent. Anxious to get him in here and see what he looks like.

“We trust the front office. They’ve earned the trust of fans and everybody like us that’s trying to win.”

Cease is ready
Dylan Cease struck out three and walked one over four scoreless innings on Wednesday. The right-hander has one Cactus League start remaining Monday in Mesa, Ariz., against the Cubs.

“It was solid. It was exactly what we needed at this point in the year,” Cease said. “The biggest thing is just getting ahead in the count and mixing [pitches]. Also getting up and down a couple of times, kind of getting the body used to that. ... Definitely the curveball for a strike is a big emphasis. I think when I mix like that and I keep it in the strike zone, it's hard to hit.”

When asked about that final start against the Cubs, Cease smiled and said, “I feel ready.”

“Make the next start, maintain focus and keep preparing the body,” Cease said. “I'm excited just because of how talented the team is. It's been a little bit more of a relaxing situation knowing that I had a little bit of success.”

Cease faced a Texas lineup on Wednesday featuring strong sluggers like Marcus Semien, Corey Seager and Adolis Garcia at the top.

“Their 1-2 are damn near two of the best infielders around,” Cease said. “So to face those guys is solid.”

Kopech takes the mound
Michael Kopech is scheduled to make his 2022 Cactus League debut against the Reds on Thursday night in Goodyear, Ariz., after throwing two innings of live batting practice on Friday.

“He’s ready to throw two,” La Russa said. “I’m going to embrace observational analytics to the point to where I suffocate it. Just watch him at two. He’s feeling good.”

La Russa wouldn’t name his Opening Day starter or set his initial regular-season rotation Wednesday. Lucas Giolito, Lance Lynn and Cease should get the first series in Detroit, while Kopech will have a second Cactus League start Tuesday in the finale against the Padres before his status is determined.
