White Sox prospect Cespedes to debut
It’s Cespedes time all over again.
The Chicago White Sox assigned Yoelqui Cespedes, the team’s No. 2 prospect, to the High-A Winston-Salem Dash for his Minor League debut on Saturday.
The 23-year-old outfielder and younger brother of Yoenis Cespedes defected while playing for Cuba’s national team in an independent Canadian-American Association showcase in the summer of 2019. Although he was eligible to sign with a big league organization in March 2020, Cespedes spent extra time working out with his older brother and signed a contract with Chicago with a $2.05 million dollar bonus in a deal announced Jan. 15 of this year.
Cespedes batted .287/.351/.415 in the top Cuban league and was 24-for-95 (.253) with six doubles over 27 games for the Cuban team over two years in Can-Am play. While he profiles to hit for above-average power, his best tool is his 70-grade arm. That cannon is complemented by 55-grade speed, making him an asset at any position on the grass. The White Sox intend to develop him as a center fielder.
The High-A Dash host the Greensboro Grasshoppers (a Pirates affiliate) at 6 p.m. ET, with Cespedes joining a roster that already includes infielders Yolbert Sanchez (White Sox No. 17) and Lenyn Sosa (No. 23), as well as righty Caleb Freeman (No. 20).
