Team to watch
Any game featuring Jackson Chourio is worth tuning in for, as Brewers fans learned during his breakout 2022, so Double-A Biloxi should draw a lot of eyes in the first few months of the season. There will be more than just the top prospect in the Southern League, however. Fresh off being named to the MLB Pipeline All-Defense Team, Jeferson Quero heads to the Shuckers for his Double-A debut, and Tyler Black – the 2021 33rd overall pick who’s proven he can hit when healthy – adds additional length to the lineup. Those who love elite velocity should also be keen to watch Abner Uribe’s appearances out of the Biloxi bullpen now that knee injuries appear to be in his rearview.
Players we could see in MLB in 2023
The Brewers already dipped into their prospect pool when they left Joey Wiemer off the Opening Day roster, only to call him up a day later. No. 2 prospect Sal Frelick shouldn’t be far behind as he brings one of the Minors’ best hit tools back to the International League. Robert Gasser, Ethan Small, Janson Junk and Uribe all figure to add to Milwaukee’s pitching depth at points in 2023 after beginning the season in the upper levels.
New faces
Jacob Misiorowski, a junior-college product and 2022 second-rounder, made only two professional starts last season and returns to Single-A Carolina to begin his first full season. First-rounder Eric Brown Jr. and 72nd overall pick Robert Moore received a more aggressive assignment to High-A Wisconsin because of their more extensive collegiate careers. Joseph Hernandez was acquired from the Mariners in an early January trade for Justin Topa and moves to Wisconsin as well, marking his first time above Single-A.
On the shelf
Logan Henderson is being held back and built up at Milwaukee’s Arizona complex to start the season. The 21-year-old right-hander pitched only 13 2/3 innings in the Minors last season in his return from elbow surgery, and the Brewers want him getting a few more starts in extended spring training before joining an A-ball affiliate this spring.
