Ohtani, Angels face White Sox in Free Game of the Day
The reigning American League MVP gets the nod as two star-powered teams go head-to-head in Anaheim tonight in MLB.TV’s Free Game of the Day.
Shohei Ohtani took the mound for the Angels against the White Sox on Wednesday with Los Angeles looking to bounce back from Tuesday's loss to Chicago.
Ohtani is fresh off a career game against the Royals, pitching eight scoreless innings with 13 strikeouts on June 22. He looks for another strong outing as the Halos find themselves fighting to get back into the playoff picture thanks to a disappointing stretch in May and June.
Also looking to recover from an underwhelming first half, the White Sox are counting on Michael Kopech, who has posted a 2.59 ERA in 13 starts so far. Chicago is currently six games behind the AL Central-leading Twins coming into play on Wednesday.
The matchup features some of the hottest hitters in baseball, and Ohtani should have his work cut out for him. White Sox first baseman Andrew Vaughn, in the midst of a spectacular sophomore season, is hitting .324 in June. Tim Anderson’s .344 batting average is tied for the American League lead among hitters with at least 200 plate appearances.
Then, of course, there’s Angels slugger Mike Trout, whose 23 home runs this season are tied for the second-most in baseball behind Aaron Judge.
