LIVE NOW: Ohtani, Trout FREE on MLB.TV
Wander Franco is a 21-year-old wunderkind and already one of the best hitters in MLB. Shohei Ohtani is the reigning American League MVP and one of the most gifted players ever seen.
You can watch these two elite talents -- oh, and three-time MVP Mike Trout! -- for free right now when the Rays and Angels clash on the MLB.TV Free Game of the Day.
After finishing third in 2021 AL Rookie of the Year voting, Franco is hitting better than .300 and is among the league leaders in extra-base hits. But no Ray has been hotter recently than outfielder Manuel Margot, who was named the AL Player of the Week on Monday. He was second to nobody in hits (12) or RBIs (12) last week.
Ohtani has gotten off to a bit of a slow start at the plate, but he may be on the verge of a breakout. In Monday's 11-3 win over the Rays, Ohtani went 3-for-4 with five RBIs, including the first grand slam of his pro career -- in Japan or the U.S. Ohtani is now just one homer away from reaching No. 100 in his five-year MLB career.
Trout also went deep on Monday -- the first of back-to-back homers with Ohtani. It was Trout's 161st homer at Angel Stadium, breaking the previous record set by Tim Salmon. Trout has bounced back from an injury-marred 2021 campaign to once again perform as one of the best players in the sport. However, the Angels’ best hitter right now might be outfielder Taylor Ward. After four nondescript, limited seasons with the Angels, the 28-year-old has broken out and is pacing the American League in batting average, on-base percentage and OPS.
Rays scheduled starting pitcher Corey Kluber will try to quiet one of baseball’s most potent offenses. The two-time Cy Young Award winner has a 2.36 ERA in 26 2/3 innings this season and has given up only one run on five hits in his previous 14 frames. Kluber has had decent success against Ohtani and Trout, limiting that dynamic duo to just three hits in 23 at-bats. Granted, two of those hits left the park.
The Angels are expected to send Reid Detmers to the mound. The rookie left-hander was the team’s No. 1 prospect entering last season according to MLB Pipeline. He has registered a 5.32 ERA through 22 innings this year.
