Second opinion confirms surgery for Velasquez
MIAMI -- Vince Velasquez will undergo surgery for a vascular issue with his right middle finger, though a date has not yet been set, the Phillies confirmed on Thursday.
The right-hander received a second opinion on Tuesday in Dallas to be sure a procedure was necessary. Velasquez has a pinch that is limiting blood flow to the finger, possibly caused by loose cartilage at the tip of the finger.
Velasquez, 25, is expected to be ready for Spring Training. Recuperation for the surgery is six to eight weeks.
The Phillies originally announced Velasquez would undergo season-ending surgery when they placed him on the 60-day disabled list on Aug. 22. He hadn't pitched since Aug. 10, the same day he exited a start against the Mets feeling numbness in his middle finger.
In 15 starts for the Phillies this year, the hard-throwing Velasquez went 2-7 with a 5.13 ERA over 72 innings. Just a year ago, he posted an 8-6 record with a 4.12 ERA in 24 starts.
