Baseball legend Vin Scully earned another accolade for his work as the voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers, as the longtime broadcaster was awarded with Baseball Digest’s second annual Lifetime Achievement Award. 

The award, which was first presented to Willie Mays in 2021, recognizes a living individual whose career has been spent in or around Major League Baseball and who has made significant contributions to the national game. The selection was made by a distinguished panel of 17 longtime MLB participants and observers via independently submitted votes.

“I think, first of all, any award that’s already been won by Willie Mays, who certainly was one of my favorite players and one for whom I had great respect, is an honor,” Scully said via a press release. “It’s an honor to even have my name linked with his in some way. I was honored, delighted and surprised that I turned out to be the second winner of Baseball Digest’s Lifetime Achievement Award. I’m proud of it and humble at the same time.” 

Scully's illustrious career calling Dodgers games started in 1950 and ended in 2016, the longest tenure of any broadcaster with a single team in professional sports history. He was awarded the National Baseball Hall of Fames Ford C. Frick Award in 1982 and was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. 

Scully, who called six championships during his time with the Dodgers, was given an honorary World Series ring after the Dodgers took home the 2020 crown. It was the team’s first championship since 1988.

Scully was selected for Baseball Digest’s 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award from a list of candidates that included Dr. James Andrews, Paul Beeston, Steve Blass, Marty Brennaman, Bobby Cox, Cito Gaston, Pat Gillick, Bill James, Jaime Jarrín, Sandy Koufax, Jerry Reinsdorf, Rachel Robinson, Bud Selig, Janet Marie Smith, Joe Torre and Bill White.
