Home-plate umpire Layne hit by foul ball, exits

April 20th, 2018

ANAHEIM -- Home-plate umpire Jerry Layne left Thursday's Red Sox-Angels game with an injury after a foul ball hit his right elbow in the first inning.
Layne is day to day with bruising. X-rays were negative.
"It was loud," Red Sox catcher said. "I heard the sound, and I heard Jerry hurt, so it was bad."
Greg Gibson, who was originally umpiring first base, took over behind the plate, as the crew remained with just three umpires.
