BOSTON -- Thrust into an emergency start after Kevin Gausman's controversial ejection one day earlier, Tyler Wilson came up big in leading the Orioles to an 8-3 victory Thursday and a split of this eventful four-game series against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Manny Machado helped Wilson's efforts by hitting a mammoth three-run homer to cap a five-run fourth inning by the Orioles. Seth Smith went 4-for-4 from the leadoff spot, scoring twice and driving in two runs.

"We got the split," said Machado, who smashed three homers in a series in which he came in as a focal point. "We came back and battled the last four games. We beat a great team two times out of four, so it's a great day. Now we get to go home and continue to do business and handling what we need to do."

It was an unspectacular performance by Wilson, but just what the Orioles needed, as the righty allowed six hits and three runs over six innings. Wilson was promoted from Triple-A Norfolk to make the start.
"I was grateful for the opportunity from the time of getting the call, all the way up to learning that I was starting and throughout the game today," said Wilson. "Obviously, there's a lot going on in the game right now, and I was just thankful to be the one called on to go out and challenge those guys and give our team a chance to win."
Kyle Kendrick didn't fare nearly as well in his return from Triple-A for Boston, allowing eight hits and six runs over four innings. The sinkerballer was called on to replace knuckleballer Steven Wright, who is out for the season with a left knee injury that will require surgery next week.

"Obviously, it wasn't the game that I planned to have," said Kendrick. "I just left some pitches up in that fourth inning. The ball to Machado was just a sinker down the middle. I was a little amped up and I think I was overthrowing a little bit. Throw well the next start, and this one's forgotten about."
Dustin Pedroia hit his first homer of the season for the Red Sox. Brandon Workman pitched three scoreless innings in relief, marking his first appearance in the Major Leagues since 2014, but was then optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket after the game.

For the Red Sox, it was the conclusion of a 4-5 homestand against the Yankees, Cubs and Orioles that was loaded with subplots.
"There was a lot here over the 10 days," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "Unfortunately, the bottom line is 4-5 is not what we're looking to do on a homestand against good teams. The bottom line is the win-loss record is what matters most, and we've got to do better at home."

Machado's missile: Machado's tape-measure tiebreaking homer in the fourth had a projected distance of 466 feet, according to Statcast™, the longest by a visiting player at Fenway in the last three seasons. Benintendi drive flagged down by Rickard: Down five runs with two outs in the seventh, the Red Sox loaded the bases on singles by Jackie Bradley Jr. and Christian Vazquez and a walk by Pedroia. Up stepped Andrew Benintendi, and he briefly gave Boston some hope with a drive to deep right. But Orioles right fielder Joey Rickard -- though he got spun around a bit -- made a stumbling catch to end the threat.

UNDER REVIEW
In the top of the eighth inning, Boston chose to challenge a play in which Orioles left fielder Hyun Soo Kim was awarded first base for being hit by a pitch. After the replay review, it was determined that the ball never came in contact with Kim and the call was overturned. Kim eventually struck out.

WHAT'S NEXT
Orioles: The White Sox will be the O's first American League opponent not from the AL East when Wade Miley gets the start in the series opener at 7:05 p.m. ET on Friday at Camden Yards. The southpaw has a 2.32 ERA, though he has surrendered 19 walks thus far. Miley has hit the strike zone just 40.2 percent of the time, according to Statcast™.
Red Sox: Left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez kicks off a six-game road trip for Boston when he faces the Twins on Friday night at Target Field. Rodriguez has been marvelous in his last two starts, giving up one run over 12 innings. First pitch is scheduled for 8:10 p.m. ET.
